Loop
“Wander beneath whispering pines and blooming heather, where wildlife and history color every tranquil step.”
Nestled in the heart of the Veluwe region, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop begins near the Nunspeet Forestry Office, a recognizable landmark just outside the town of Nunspeet. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone seeking a gentle immersion into Dutch woodland.
Getting There Nunspeet is well-connected by train, with regular services from major cities like Amsterdam and Utrecht. From Nunspeet station, it’s a short walk or bike ride to the trailhead near the Boswachterij Nunspeet visitor center. For those arriving by car, ample parking is available at the visitor center, located at Plesmanlaan 2, 8072 PT Nunspeet.
Trail Experience The loop meanders through a mosaic of pine and deciduous forests, open heathland, and tranquil meadows. The paths are mostly wide, well-maintained, and flat, making navigation straightforward—though it’s always wise to use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and wayfinding.
Landmarks and Points of Interest Within the first kilometer, you’ll pass through dense pine woods, remnants of early 20th-century forestry efforts. Keep an eye out for the old fire watchtower, a silent sentinel from the days when forest fires were a constant threat. Around the 2 km (1.2 mile) mark, the landscape opens onto the Hendrik Mouwenveld, a broad heathland named after a local conservationist. This area bursts into color with blooming heather in late summer and is a prime spot for spotting roe deer and foxes at dawn or dusk.
Nature and Wildlife The Veluwe is renowned for its biodiversity. Along the loop, listen for the drumming of woodpeckers and the melodic calls of songbirds. Red squirrels dart through the undergrowth, and if you’re lucky, you might glimpse a herd of wild boar rooting in the forest floor. The sandy soils and open glades attract butterflies and dragonflies, especially in warmer months.
Historical Significance The region’s history is woven into the landscape. The forests were once royal hunting grounds, and traces of ancient burial mounds can still be found just off the main path, particularly near the 4 km (2.5 mile) point. Informational signs provide context about the area’s prehistoric and medieval past, making this loop as educational as it is scenic.
Facilities and Preparation Rest areas with benches are scattered along the route, and the visitor center at the start offers toilets, maps, and refreshments. The trail is accessible year-round, though sturdy shoes are recommended in wetter months due to occasional muddy patches. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife.
This loop offers a gentle, immersive experience in one of the Netherlands’ most beloved natural areas, blending easy walking with rich opportunities for wildlife observation and a glimpse into the region’s storied past.
