Loop
“Winding through lush forests, tranquil streams, and historic estates, this gentle loop brims with natural wonder.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Velp, just northeast of Arnhem, the Rozendaalse Beek, Vijver Beekhuizen and Tonberg Loop offers a gentle 15 km (about 9.3 miles) circuit with approximately 100 metres (328 feet) of elevation gain, making it accessible for most walkers. The trailhead is conveniently located near Parkeerplaats Beekhuizen, a well-known parking area at Beekhuizenseweg 1, 6881 AA Velp, Netherlands. For those arriving by public transport, Velp railway station is the closest major stop, with local buses and a short walk leading directly to the start.
Woodland Streams and Historic Estates
The route quickly immerses you in the lush woodlands of the Veluwezoom National Park, following the Rozendaalse Beek, a centuries-old stream that once powered local watermills. Early on, you’ll pass through the Beekhuizen estate, where landscaped ponds and ornamental bridges evoke the area’s 19th-century grandeur. The Vijver Beekhuizen, a large reflective pond, is a highlight around the 2 km (1.2 mile) mark, often frequented by herons and kingfishers. The path here is wide and well-maintained, with gentle undulations and occasional wooden footbridges.
Climbing Tonberg and Panoramic Views
Approaching the halfway point, the trail ascends the Tonberg, a modest hill that rises to about 100 metres (328 feet) above sea level. The climb is gradual, winding through mature beech and oak forests. At the summit, clearings offer sweeping views across the Veluwezoom’s rolling heathlands and, on clear days, glimpses of Arnhem’s skyline to the southwest. This section is particularly beautiful in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple.
Wildlife and Natural Features
Throughout the loop, keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds. The area is also known for its rich insect life, especially butterflies in the open glades. The Rozendaalse Beek itself is home to freshwater fish and amphibians, and the banks are lined with wildflowers in spring and summer.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire loop is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for tracking your progress and exploring side trails. Surfaces range from compacted gravel to forest paths, with occasional muddy patches after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are advisable, though the route is generally easy and suitable for families.
Historical Context
The region’s history is closely tied to the estates and water management systems developed by Dutch nobility. The Rozendaalse Beek was engineered in the Middle Ages to supply water to the nearby Rozendaal Castle, which can be visited via a short detour. The Beekhuizen estate, once a private retreat, is now a public park, with remnants of its landscaped gardens and follies still visible along the route.
Getting There
By car, set your navigation to Parkeerplaats Beekhuizen, Beekhuizenseweg 1, Velp. Ample parking is available, especially on weekdays. For public transport, take the train to Velp station, then follow signs or use HiiKER to walk or cycle the remaining 2 km (1.2 miles) to the trailhead. Local buses also serve the area, with stops near the park entrance.
This loop offers a blend of natural beauty, gentle elevation, and cultural history, making it a rewarding day out for walkers of all abilities.
