Navigating the Route
The path is well-marked and can be confidently followed using HiiKER for real-time navigation. The route weaves through a patchwork of heathlands, pine forests, and tranquil fens, with the landscape shaped by centuries of both natural processes and human influence. The terrain is mostly sandy or packed earth, with occasional boardwalks over wetter sections, ensuring dry feet even after rain.
Highlights and Landmarks
Malpieven and Vennen: Within the first 3 km (about 2 miles), you’ll encounter the Groot Malpieven, a series of serene ponds and wetlands. These vennen are remnants of ancient peat-cutting and are now havens for dragonflies, frogs, and waterfowl. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to spot herons and, if lucky, a kingfisher darting across the water.
Brugseheide: Around the 7 km (4.3 miles) mark, the trail enters Brugseheide, a mosaic of heath and woodland. This area is especially vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms purple. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep, which help maintain the open heath, and listen for the distinctive call of the Eurasian skylark overhead.
Abdij Weg and Historical Context: At approximately 12 km (7.5 miles), the route follows Abdij Weg, a historic path that once connected local abbeys and villages. The region has a rich monastic history, with nearby Achelse Kluis Abbey just across the Belgian border. While the abbey itself isn’t directly on the route, the influence of monastic land management is evident in the orderly pine plantations and old field boundaries.
Wildlife and Nature
The area is part of the larger Kempen landscape, known for its biodiversity. Roe deer, foxes, and badgers inhabit the woods, while the open areas attract butterflies and rare ground-nesting birds. In spring and autumn, migratory birds use the wetlands as a stopover, making binoculars a worthwhile addition to your pack.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
With a total elevation gain of less than 10 metres (about 30 feet), the walk is rated easy and suitable for most fitness levels. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended due to sandy patches and occasional muddy spots after rain. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the vennen and at forest clearings.
Facilities and Refreshments
Cafés and restrooms are available at the start and end point near Natuurpoort Malpie. There are no facilities directly on the trail, so bring water and snacks. The route is dog-friendly, though dogs should be kept on a leash in nature reserves.
