Loop
“Wander through royal forests, blooming heath, and tranquil meadows on this enchanting loop in the Veluwe.”
Starting near the village of Hoog Soeren, this 20 km (12.4 miles) loop through the Kroondomein, Valkenberg, and Kroondomein Het Loo offers a gentle elevation gain of about 100 metres (328 feet), making it accessible for most hikers. The trail weaves through the heart of the Veluwe, the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands, renowned for its rolling heathlands, ancient woodlands, and royal history.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Apeldoorn is the nearest major city with frequent train connections from Amsterdam, Utrecht, and other Dutch cities. From Apeldoorn Central Station, local buses head toward Hoog Soeren, with stops near the trailhead. If driving, parking is available at Hoog Soeren, close to the entrance of the Kroondomein Het Loo, which is well-signposted from the A1 and A50 motorways.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route is mostly flat with a few gentle undulations, ideal for a relaxed day hike. The path alternates between wide sandy tracks and narrower forest trails, passing through dense pine and deciduous woods, open heath, and tranquil meadows. Navigation is straightforward, but the area’s network of intersecting paths can be confusing—using HiiKER for offline maps and waypoints is highly recommended.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Kroondomein Het Loo: This royal estate, once the private hunting grounds of the Dutch royal family, is steeped in history. The forests here are centuries old, and you may spot remnants of royal hunting lodges or old boundary stones. The estate is closed to the public during the autumn hunting season, so check access dates before planning your hike. - Valkenberg: Around the halfway mark, the trail skirts the Valkenberg, a gently rising hill offering panoramic views over the Veluwe’s heathlands. This is a great spot for a break and some wildlife watching—red deer, wild boar, and foxes are common, especially at dawn or dusk. - Hoog Soeren: The picturesque village at the start and end of the loop is known for its historic church and charming inns, perfect for a post-hike meal or drink.
Nature and Wildlife
The Veluwe is a biodiversity hotspot. Expect to see a mosaic of habitats: ancient oak and beech forests, purple-flowering heath in late summer, and sandy drift landscapes. Birdlife is abundant, with woodpeckers, buzzards, and sometimes even the rare black stork. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times for spotting larger mammals like deer and wild boar.
Planning and Preparation
The trail is well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels, but sturdy footwear is recommended due to sandy and occasionally muddy sections. There are no facilities along the route, so bring enough water and snacks for the day. Weather can change quickly, so pack a rain jacket even in summer. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash in most areas due to wildlife.
For up-to-date trail conditions, closures, and detailed navigation, consult HiiKER before setting out. The Kroondomein, Valkenberg, and Het Loo Loop is a classic Dutch hike, blending royal history, natural beauty, and the serene landscapes of the Veluwe.
