Loop
“Wander through a patchwork of heather, moss, and mirror-like bogs alive with birdsong and history.”
Starting from the edge of Zeegse, a small village in the Drenthe province of the Netherlands, this gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop explores the tranquil peat bogs and heathlands of Siepelveen and Grootveen, accessible via Zeegsersteeg and De Vedders. With virtually no elevation gain, this route is ideal for those seeking a leisurely walk immersed in nature, suitable for families and casual hikers alike.
Getting There Zeegse is easily reached by public transport from Groningen or Assen. Take a train to Assen, then transfer to a local bus (such as Qbuzz line 58) toward Zuidlaren, alighting at the Zeegse bus stop near the Dorpsstraat. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the Dorpsstraat or at the small lot by the Zeegsersteeg trailhead, just north of the village center.
Heathlands and Peat Bogs The trail quickly leads you into the heart of the Drentsche Aa National Park, a landscape shaped by centuries of peat cutting and grazing. The Siepelveen and Grootveen are classic examples of raised bogs, now protected for their unique flora and fauna. Expect to see carpets of sphagnum moss, cotton grass, and heather, especially vibrant in late summer. The area is home to rare dragonflies, frogs, and a variety of birds, including the curlew and snipe. Keep an eye out for grazing Highland cattle and sheep, which help maintain the open character of the heath.
Landmarks and Points of Interest At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) in, the trail skirts the edge of Siepelveen, a shallow peat lake fringed by birch and pine. Wooden boardwalks cross wetter sections, offering safe passage and excellent vantage points for birdwatching. Continuing along De Vedders, you’ll pass through open heath dotted with juniper bushes—some of the oldest in the region. The Grootveen area, around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, is particularly peaceful, with wide views across the bog and occasional benches for a rest.
Historical Context This landscape has been shaped by human hands for centuries. Peat was once harvested here as fuel, leaving behind the pools and bogs that now define the area. The Drentsche Aa valley is also known for its ancient burial mounds and traces of prehistoric settlements, though these are less visible along this particular route. The ongoing restoration of the bogs is part of a broader effort to preserve the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
Navigation and Trail Conditions The route is well-marked with posts and information panels, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the trail and check your progress. Paths are mostly flat and firm, though some sections can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash due to grazing livestock and sensitive wildlife habitats.
Facilities and Practical Tips There are no facilities directly on the trail, but Zeegse offers a café and small shops for refreshments before or after your walk. Bring water and snacks, and consider binoculars for birdwatching. The open landscape can be exposed to wind and sun, so dress accordingly.
This easy, scenic loop is a perfect introduction to the quiet beauty of Drenthe’s peatlands and heath, offering a peaceful escape into one of the Netherlands’ most distinctive natural environments.
