Loop
“Stroll through a vibrant tapestry of dikes, wetlands, and timeless Dutch countryside alive with history and wildlife.”
Starting from the outskirts of Schiedam, near the intersection of Broekweg and Heemraad Witweg, this 16 km (about 10 miles) loop trail offers a flat, leisurely walk through the quintessential Dutch polder landscape, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy, scenic day out.
Getting There
Reaching the trailhead is straightforward. By public transport, take a train to Schiedam Centrum station, then transfer to local bus 51 or 54 towards Vlaardingen and alight at the Broekweg stop. From there, it’s a short walk to the starting point at the junction of Broekweg and Heemraad Witweg. If arriving by car, parking is available along Broekweg or at the small lot near the Sluispolder golf course.
Route Overview and Navigation
The loop weaves through the tranquil countryside west of Rotterdam, passing through the Sluispolder and along the Broedijk, a historic dike that once protected the low-lying farmland from flooding. The route is well-marked, but for precise navigation and to track your progress, use HiiKER, which provides up-to-date maps and waypoints.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Broedijk and Historic Dikes Early in the walk, the Broedijk offers sweeping views over the open fields and waterways. This dike, like many in the region, dates back centuries and is a testament to the Dutch mastery of water management. Keep an eye out for old sluice gates and pumping stations, some of which are still operational and can be seen along the Heemraad Witweg.
- Sluispolder and Wetlands Around the halfway mark, the trail skirts the Sluispolder, a patchwork of meadows, canals, and reed beds. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for herons, grebes, and, in spring and autumn, migratory waders. The flat, open terrain is also dotted with grazing cattle and sheep, adding to the pastoral charm.
- Heemraad Witweg and Rural Villages The route follows quiet country lanes and farm tracks, passing through small hamlets like Kethel and along the Heemraad Witweg. Here, you’ll see traditional Dutch farmhouses, windmills, and the occasional roadside produce stand. The historic village of Kethel, with its centuries-old church and cobbled streets, is a pleasant spot for a rest.
Nature and Wildlife
The polder landscape is rich in biodiversity. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the ditches, and dragonflies flit above the water. The area is part of several bird migration routes, so binoculars are recommended for spotting avian visitors. Waterfowl, hares, and the occasional fox can also be seen, especially in the quieter stretches away from the villages.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The entire loop is on well-maintained paths, a mix of paved dike roads, gravel farm tracks, and grassy embankments. Waterproof footwear is advisable in wetter months, as some sections can be muddy. There are no significant climbs or descents, making it accessible for all fitness levels. Bring water and snacks, as amenities are limited outside the villages, though there are a few cafes and bakeries in Kethel and Schiedam.
Historical Significance
This region has a deep connection to Dutch water management history. The dikes, polders, and sluices you’ll encounter are part of a centuries-old system that reclaimed land from the sea and protected it from flooding. The area’s windmills, some still operational, were once vital for pumping water out of the low-lying fields. Walking this loop is a journey through the living history of the Netherlands’ ongoing relationship with water.
