Loop
“Wander through vibrant wildflower meadows, ancient woods, and tranquil streams, soaking in Twente’s timeless charm.”
Starting from the vicinity of Ootmarsum, a charming town in the Dutch province of Overijssel, this 8 km (about 5 miles) circular route offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking a relaxed day outdoors. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available near the Mosbeekweg, or by public transport via bus connections from Oldenzaal or Almelo to Ootmarsum, followed by a short walk to the starting point.
Woodland Paths and Open Meadows
The route meanders through the lush Springendal nature reserve, renowned for its tranquil streams, ancient woodlands, and open meadows. Early on, you’ll follow the Mosbeek, a crystal-clear brook that winds through the landscape, supporting a rich diversity of plant and animal life. The area is particularly famous for its wildflowers in spring and summer, with orchids and marsh marigolds brightening the banks. Keep an eye out for kingfishers darting along the water and, if you’re lucky, roe deer grazing at the forest edge.
Uitzichttoren (Observation Tower)
Roughly 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike, you’ll reach the Uitzichttoren, a wooden observation tower that rises above the treetops. Climb the steps for panoramic views across the undulating fields and forests of Twente. This is an excellent spot for a break and some birdwatching—buzzards and woodpeckers are common sights from this vantage point.
De Bronnen and Historical Significance
Continuing along the route, you’ll encounter De Bronnen, a series of natural springs that feed the Mosbeek. These springs have been vital to the region for centuries, supporting local agriculture and early settlements. The area is dotted with information panels detailing the unique geology and history of the springs, including their role in powering historic watermills, some of which can still be seen nearby.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The paths are well-marked and mostly composed of compacted earth and gravel, making them suitable for all fitness levels and for families with children. After rainfall, some sections near the streams can become muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended. For navigation, HiiKER provides an accurate and up-to-date map of the route, ensuring you stay on track throughout the walk.
Wildlife and Seasonal Highlights
Throughout the year, the Springendal reserve is alive with wildlife. In autumn, the woodlands glow with the colors of changing leaves, and mushrooms carpet the forest floor. Birdsong accompanies you in every season, and the peaceful atmosphere makes this trail a favorite for nature lovers and photographers alike.
