Point-to-Point
“Wander sunlit meadows and timeless woodlands from Tubbergen to Weerselo, savoring Twente’s peaceful charm.”
Starting from the charming town of Tubbergen, this 14 km (about 8.7 miles) route offers a gentle, flat walk through the heart of Twente, with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy day out in the Dutch countryside. The trailhead is conveniently located near the center of Tubbergen, close to the Sint Pancratius Basilica, a recognizable landmark and a good meeting point. Tubbergen is accessible by regional bus from Almelo or Oldenzaal, both of which have train stations with connections to major Dutch cities. For those arriving by car, parking is available in the town center.
Through Landgoed Baasdam
After leaving Tubbergen, the path quickly leads into the rural landscape, passing through quiet farmland and small patches of woodland. At around 3 km (1.9 miles), you’ll enter Landgoed Baasdam, a historic estate known for its stately avenues, old farmhouses, and tranquil ponds. The estate dates back to the 19th century and is still privately owned, but the walking paths are open to the public. Keep an eye out for roe deer, hares, and a variety of woodland birds, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. The estate’s old oaks and beeches provide shade and a sense of timelessness, while the ponds attract dragonflies and waterfowl.
Crossing Rikmansbrug and the Dinkel Valley
Continuing southeast, the route approaches the Rikmansbrug, a small but picturesque bridge over the Dinkel stream at about 8 km (5 miles). This area is a highlight for nature lovers, as the Dinkel valley is known for its lush meadows and wildflowers in spring and summer. The bridge itself is a local landmark, and the surrounding fields are often dotted with grazing sheep and cattle. The Dinkel is one of the few remaining natural rivers in the Netherlands, and its meandering course supports a rich variety of plant and animal life. Pause here to listen for songbirds and watch for butterflies along the riverbanks.
Final Stretch to Weerselo
The last section of the hike leads through more open farmland and small wooded areas before reaching the village of Weerselo at around 14 km (8.7 miles). Weerselo is famous for its historic open-air market, held every Saturday, and the ruins of the old Benedictine monastery, which can be visited just outside the village center. The village itself is a pleasant place to end your walk, with several cafés and bakeries offering local treats.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but it’s always wise to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track, especially at junctions in the wooded sections. The terrain is mostly flat and suitable for all fitness levels, with well-maintained paths and only occasional muddy patches after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, and in summer, bring sun protection as some stretches are exposed. Public transport from Weerselo back to Tubbergen or nearby towns is available by bus, making it easy to plan a linear hike without retracing your steps.
