Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, grazing sheep, and echoes of history on this gentle Dutch countryside loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Oosterhout, near the well-known Slotjespark, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy day out in nature. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available near Slotjespark, or by public transport via Oosterhout’s central bus station, which is a short walk from the park.
Navigating the Route
The loop is well-marked and can be confidently followed using HiiKER for real-time navigation. The path meanders through a patchwork of open meadows, small woodlands, and the serene Hezingerveld nature reserve. Expect wide, well-maintained paths suitable for all fitness levels, including families and casual walkers.
Landmarks and Natural Highlights
After leaving the urban edge, the trail quickly immerses you in the tranquility of the Dutch countryside. At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass through the Koninkhoek, a landscape shaped by centuries of agricultural use. Here, look for traditional Dutch farmhouses and the occasional herd of grazing sheep. The area is known for its rich birdlife, especially in spring and early summer—bring binoculars to spot lapwings, storks, and the occasional kestrel hovering above the fields.
Continuing toward the halfway point, the trail enters Hezingerveld, a protected heathland and wetland area. This section, around 4.5 km (2.8 miles) in, is a highlight for nature lovers. The heath blooms with purple heather in late summer, and the wetlands attract frogs, dragonflies, and a variety of waterfowl. Wooden boardwalks keep your feet dry as you cross the marshier patches.
Historical and Cultural Context
The region around Oosterhout has a long history, with evidence of settlement dating back to Roman times. The agricultural fields you walk through have been cultivated for centuries, and the landscape reflects the careful water management that is a hallmark of Dutch rural life. Near the end of the loop, you’ll skirt the edge of Slotjespark, where remnants of medieval fortifications can still be seen—an echo of the area’s strategic importance in past centuries.
Practical Tips
There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, especially near the Hezingerveld section. While there are no steep climbs, the open fields can be exposed to wind and sun, so bring appropriate clothing and sun protection. The trail is accessible year-round, but waterproof footwear is recommended after heavy rain, as some sections can become muddy.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER before setting out, as mobile signal can be patchy in the more remote sections. Public toilets and refreshments are available in Oosterhout town center, just a short detour from the start and finish of the loop.
