Tricht to Leerdam via Grote Wiel and Galgen Wiel

This is a classic lowland river-and-dike walk through the Betuwe and the Linge valley: wide skies, orchards and pasture, long straight farm lanes, and then a string of “wielen” (deep, roundish pools) tucked against the dike—landforms that exist because water once tore through a dike and scoured out a hole that was too deep to fill, so the dike line had to bend around it. (en.hhnk.nl) Expect essentially flat terrain: about 22 km / 13.7 mi with roughly 0 m / 0 ft of climbing, so the challenge is more about wind, exposed dikes, and keeping your feet comfortable on mixed surfaces than about elevation.

Best start landmark (near Tricht): Tricht doesn’t have its own rail station; the practical rail gateway is Geldermalsen Station (a major junction). From there you can walk into Tricht via local paths/roads. (en.wikipedia.org)
A reliable “meet-up” landmark in Tricht itself is V.V. Tricht (football club), Middelweg 54, 4196 JJ Tricht, which is easy to find and has straightforward road access. (trichttournament.nl)
Finish landmark (Leerdam): Station Leerdam, Stationsweg 3, 4141 HB Leerdam—handy if you’re ending with a train ride. (treinstationinfo.nl)

Getting to the start (public transport + car)

• By train: Ride to Geldermalsen Station, then walk about 1–2 km / 0.6–1.2 mi to reach the Tricht village edge depending on your exact start point. Geldermalsen is a well-connected junction station, making it the simplest public-transport approach for Tricht-area walks. (en.wikipedia.org)

• By car: Aim for Middelweg 54, 4196 JJ Tricht (V.V. Tricht) as a practical navigation target and parking-area landmark, then begin the route from there. (trichttournament.nl)

What the route feels like, section by section

0–5 km (0–3.1 mi): Tricht’s lanes, orchards, and the Linge landscape
You’ll quickly settle into the Betuwe rhythm: quiet residential edges giving way to farm tracks, drainage ditches, and open fields. Tricht sits in the river landscape of Gelderland at only a few meters above sea level, so you’ll notice how “engineered” the countryside is—ditches, small canals, and raised roads/dikes defining where water can and can’t go. (en.wikipedia.org)
Surface is typically a mix of pavement, brick farm roads, and compacted paths; after rain, grassy verges can be slick.

5–12 km (3.1–7.5 mi): Dike-top walking and “wiel” country (Grote Wiel / Galgen Wiel area)
As you approach the Leerdam side of the Linge valley, the scenery becomes more dike-dominated: long, slightly elevated lines with big views over polders and watercourses. This is where the “wiel” theme makes sense. In Dutch waterland, a wiel is a deep scour pool created when a dike failed and rushing water excavated a hole; later, the dike was rebuilt around it, leaving a distinctive bend and a permanent pool. These pools often look deceptively calm but can be steep-sided and deep—keep children and dogs close near
