Loop
“Wander through whispering pines, golden dunes, seaside art, and a storied lighthouse on this enchanting loop.”
Begin your journey near the Scheveningen district of The Hague, easily accessible by tram or bus from Den Haag Centraal Station, or by car with parking available near the Oostduinpark entrance. This loop covers approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) with negligible elevation gain, making it suitable for all fitness levels and ideal for a leisurely day out.
Oostduinpark and Koningsbosch: Coastal Forests and Dunes The route starts at Oostduinpark, a lush coastal forest known for its winding sandy paths, towering pine trees, and open grassy clearings. Early in the hike, you’ll notice the transition from dense woodland to the more open, undulating dunes of Koningsbosch. This area is a haven for birdlife—look for woodpeckers, jays, and the occasional fox darting through the undergrowth. The sandy soil supports a variety of wildflowers in spring and summer, and the air is often filled with the scent of pine and sea breeze.
Museum Beelden aan Zee: Art and Architecture by the Sea At roughly the halfway point, you’ll reach Museum Beelden aan Zee, located just behind the famous Scheveningen boulevard. This unique museum is dedicated to contemporary sculpture and is partially built into the dunes, blending art with the natural landscape. Even if you don’t enter, the outdoor sculptures and the striking architecture are worth a pause. The nearby boulevard offers cafés and restrooms, making it a convenient spot for a break.
Lichttoren Noorderhoofd: The Iconic Red Lighthouse Continuing along the coast, the trail brings you to the Noorderhoofd Lighthouse, also known as the Scheveningen Lighthouse. This red-and-white tower has guided ships since the 19th century and remains a prominent landmark. The surrounding area is rich in maritime history, with plaques and displays detailing Scheveningen’s fishing heritage. The beach here is wide and sandy, perfect for a short detour to dip your toes in the North Sea.
Wildlife and Nature Highlights Throughout the loop, keep an eye out for rabbits, kestrels, and—if you’re lucky—roe deer in the quieter stretches of the dunes. The mix of forest, dune, and coastal habitats supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, making this route especially rewarding for nature enthusiasts.
Navigation and Planning The entire loop is well-marked, but for added confidence and route details, use HiiKER for offline maps and navigation. The flat terrain and well-maintained paths mean standard walking shoes are sufficient, though waterproof footwear is recommended in wet weather. Bring layers, as coastal winds can be brisk even in summer.
Getting There Public transport is straightforward: trams 1 and 9 from Den Haag Centraal stop within a short walk of Oostduinpark. If driving, set your navigation to Oostduinpark, The Hague, and look for parking near the Duinweg or Pompstationsweg entrances. The area is bike-friendly, with ample racks near the park and museum.
This loop offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural highlights, and historical landmarks, all within easy reach of central The Hague.
