Loop
“Wander beneath golden canopies and beside tranquil ponds, discovering hidden history and bursts of seasonal color.”
Nestled on the eastern edge of The Hague, the Landgoed Clingendael Loop offers a gentle 3 km (about 1.9 miles) stroll with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for all ages and fitness levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main entrance of Clingendael Park, close to Wassenaarseweg and the Clingendael Institute, a well-known landmark in the area.
Getting There For those arriving by public transport, tram lines 9 and 20, as well as several bus routes, stop at the “Laan van Clingendael” or “Wassenaarseweg” stops, both within a short walk of the park entrance. If driving, parking is available along Wassenaarseweg or in the small lot near the park’s main gates, though spaces can fill quickly on weekends.
Historic Estate and Japanese Garden The loop winds through the historic Clingendael Estate, a site dating back to the 17th century. The estate’s stately manor house, visible from several points along the trail, was once home to the van Brienen family and later served as headquarters for the Dutch government during World War II. One of the highlights is the Japanese Garden, a national monument open only during select weeks in spring and autumn due to its delicate flora. The garden, about 1 km (0.6 miles) from the start, features rare plants, stone lanterns, and picturesque bridges, offering a tranquil spot for reflection and photography.
Woodlands, Waterways, and Wildlife The path meanders through mature beech and oak woodlands, interspersed with open lawns and ornamental ponds. Birdwatchers will appreciate the variety of species, including woodpeckers, nuthatches, and herons that frequent the waterways. In spring and summer, the rhododendron borders burst into color, while autumn brings a golden canopy overhead. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and, occasionally, foxes darting through the undergrowth.
Navigation and Facilities The loop is well-marked with clear signage, but for added confidence, the route can be followed using HiiKER, which provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints. Benches are scattered throughout the park, and there are several picnic spots near the ponds. Public toilets are available near the main entrance and the tea house, which also serves light refreshments during the warmer months.
Accessibility and Tips With its flat, well-maintained paths, the Landgoed Clingendael Loop is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in most areas, especially near the Japanese Garden. The park is open year-round, though the Japanese Garden has restricted access, so check opening times if you wish to visit this highlight.
This easy, scenic loop is ideal for a leisurely walk, a family outing, or a peaceful escape into nature, all within easy reach of The Hague’s city center.
