Loop
“Begin your journey at the storied Ter Apel Monastery and wander through blooming heath, ancient woods, and tranquil streams.”
Starting out from the historic village of Ter Apel, this 8 km (about 5 miles) loop along the Westerwoldepad offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the renowned Ter Apel Monastery (Klooster Ter Apel), a significant landmark and a great place to begin your journey. The monastery itself, dating back to the 15th century, is a highlight for those interested in the region’s medieval history and architecture.
Getting There Ter Apel is well-connected by public transport. Buses run regularly from Emmen and Stadskanaal, stopping at Ter Apel Busstation, which is a short walk from the monastery and the trailhead. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the monastery’s visitor lot (Boslaan 3, 9561 LH Ter Apel), providing easy access to the start of the hike.
Trail Experience and Navigation The Westerwoldepad is clearly marked, but for added confidence and route planning, HiiKER is recommended for up-to-date navigation and trail information. The path meanders through a patchwork of heathland, woodland, and open fields, typical of the Westerwolde region. Expect well-maintained dirt and gravel tracks, with occasional stretches along quiet rural roads.
Nature and Wildlife The area is known for its tranquil landscapes and diverse habitats. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through mixed forests where you might spot roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds. The heathland sections are especially vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms, painting the landscape in shades of purple. Keep an eye out for buzzards and kestrels circling overhead, and listen for the distinctive calls of woodpeckers echoing through the trees.
Landmarks and Points of Interest After leaving the monastery grounds, the route heads toward the Vossenberg, a low, wooded rise that offers a peaceful spot for a break. This area is steeped in local folklore, with tales of foxes and other wildlife that once roamed the region. At roughly the halfway point (about 4 km/2.5 miles), you’ll cross the Ruiten Aa, a meandering stream that has shaped the landscape for centuries. The banks of the Ruiten Aa are rich in wildflowers and provide habitat for kingfishers and dragonflies.
Historical Significance The Westerwolde region has a long history as a borderland, with traces of ancient settlements and medieval trade routes. The Ter Apel Monastery itself was a crucial stop for pilgrims and travelers in the Middle Ages, and the surrounding forests were once part of vast estates managed by the monastery’s monks. Interpretive signs along the trail provide insights into the area’s past, including its role in regional conflicts and its transformation into a peaceful nature reserve.
Practical Tips There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the Vossenberg and along the Ruiten Aa. The trail is mostly exposed, so bring sun protection and plenty of water, especially in warmer months. The nearest shops and cafes are back in Ter Apel village, so plan accordingly if you need supplies before or after your hike. The flat terrain and well-marked paths make this an ideal walk for families or those seeking a relaxed day outdoors.
