Loop
“Wander through a tapestry of meadows, ancient hedgerows, and riverside history in the Reestdal valley.”
Starting from the vicinity of Balkbrug, a small village in the Dutch province of Overijssel, the Reeststouwe and Vaart Weg hike offers a gentle 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Reestdal Visitor Centre, a well-known landmark that serves as an excellent orientation point and offers parking as well as information about the local area.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Balkbrug is accessible via regional bus services from Zwolle or Hoogeveen. The nearest bus stop is “Balkbrug, Centrum,” which is a short walk from the Reestdal Visitor Centre. If traveling by car, follow the N377 and look for signs to the visitor centre, where parking is available.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route meanders through the Reestdal, a unique lowland river valley straddling the border between Overijssel and Drenthe. The landscape is characterized by meandering streams, wet meadows, and ancient hedgerows. The Reest River itself is one of the few remaining natural streams in the Netherlands, and its winding course is a highlight throughout the walk. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and signposts; for added confidence, use the HiiKER app to track your progress and ensure you stay on course.
Nature and Wildlife
Expect to encounter a rich variety of flora and fauna. The wet meadows are home to orchids in late spring and early summer, while the hedgerows and small woodlands provide habitat for songbirds, roe deer, and occasionally foxes. The area is also known for its butterfly populations, especially in the warmer months. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for storks, which nest in the region, and kingfishers along the riverbanks.
Points of Interest and Historical Significance
At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you’ll pass close to the historic Reestkerk, a centuries-old church that stands as a testament to the area’s long history of settlement. The Reest valley has been inhabited since the Middle Ages, and remnants of old farmsteads and traditional Dutch “esdorpen” (village greens) can be seen along the route. The landscape itself is a living museum, shaped by centuries of agriculture and water management.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The paths are mostly flat and well-maintained, consisting of a mix of gravel, grass, and compacted earth. Waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months, as some sections near the river can become muddy. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, making it easy to pause and enjoy the scenery. Facilities are available at the visitor centre, but there are limited options for food and drink along the trail, so bring water and snacks.
This easy, scenic walk is ideal for families, casual hikers, and anyone interested in the natural and cultural heritage of the Dutch countryside.
