Loop
“Wander through Drenthe’s blooming heaths and tranquil woodlands, where nature and history quietly intertwine.”
Nestled in the heart of Drenthe, the Bezoekerscentrum and Blankeveen Loop offers a gentle 5 km (about 3.1 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it an ideal choice for families, beginners, and anyone seeking a leisurely stroll through Dutch heathland and woodland. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Bezoekerscentrum Dwingelderveld, a well-known visitor center at Benderse 22, 7963 RA Ruinen, providing easy access and ample parking.
Getting There Travelers arriving by public transport can take a train to Hoogeveen or Meppel, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 35 or 36) toward Ruinen. The bus stop “Ruinen, Bezoekerscentrum” is just steps from the trailhead, making it straightforward to reach without a car. For those driving, the visitor center offers a spacious parking lot, and the route is well-signposted from the main roads.
Trail Experience The loop begins at the visitor center, where you can pick up maps and information or use HiiKER for reliable navigation throughout the walk. The path is mostly flat and well-maintained, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs in dry conditions. Early on, the route skirts the edge of the Dwingelderveld National Park, the largest wet heathland in Western Europe.
Heathland and Wetlands After about 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail opens onto expansive heath, especially striking in late summer when the heather blooms in vibrant purple. The Blankeveen, a shallow lake, appears around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark. This area is a haven for birdwatchers—look for cranes, curlews, and the rare black grouse. The wetlands also support sundew and other unique plant species adapted to the nutrient-poor soil.
Woodland and Wildlife Continuing through patches of pine and birch forest, you may spot roe deer, foxes, or even a herd of grazing sheep, which help maintain the heathland ecosystem. Interpretive signs along the way explain the delicate balance of flora and fauna, as well as the park’s efforts to preserve this landscape.
Historical Significance The Dwingelderveld region has a rich history, with evidence of prehistoric settlements and ancient burial mounds nearby. The area was traditionally used for grazing and peat cutting, shaping the landscape you see today. The visitor center itself offers exhibitions on local history and the cultural heritage of Drenthe.
Facilities and Tips Restrooms, a café, and picnic areas are available at the visitor center. The trail is open year-round, but waterproof footwear is recommended after rain due to occasional muddy patches. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife. For navigation, HiiKER provides up-to-date trail maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track throughout your walk.
This easy, scenic loop is perfect for a half-day outing, offering a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural history in one of the Netherlands’ most cherished national parks.
