Getting to the Trailhead
The loop begins near Amersfoort, a city well-connected by public transport. From Amersfoort Central Station, you can take a bus to the 'Soesterduinen' stop, which is in close proximity to the trailhead. For those driving, parking is available at the Barchman Wuytierslaan 232 in Amersfoort, providing convenient access to the starting point.
Trail Overview
Starting from the Soesterduinen area, the trail meanders through a variety of terrains, including expansive sand dunes, dense forests, and serene heathlands. The path is well-marked and predominantly flat, making navigation straightforward. Utilizing the HiiKER app can enhance your hiking experience by providing detailed maps and real-time updates.
Soesterveen and Het Hondenland
As you progress, you'll encounter Soesterveen, a picturesque peat bog area rich in biodiversity. This section is characterized by wetland flora and is a haven for birdwatchers. Adjacent to Soesterveen is Het Hondenland, a popular spot where dogs are allowed to roam freely under control. This area features open fields and small water bodies, offering a refreshing break along the route.
Birkhoven Nature Reserve
The trail then leads into the Birkhoven Nature Reserve, a lush forested area on the outskirts of Amersfoort. Birkhoven is renowned for its diverse tree species and the Pinetum, a special collection of conifers. The reserve also includes a Rhododendron Valley, which is particularly stunning during the blooming season in late spring. Within Birkhoven, you'll find a network of well-maintained paths, including a 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) yellow-marked route that guides you through the heart of the forest. This section is also home to a scenic pond, providing a tranquil spot to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
Historical Significance
The region holds historical significance, particularly with the presence of the former NATO ammunition depot near Soesterberg. This area features 16 ammunition bunkers, with the first seven constructed in 1960. These structures serve as a reminder of the area's military history and are accessible along the trail.
Wildlife and Nature
Throughout the hike, be prepared to encounter a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. The diverse ecosystems along the trail support a rich array of flora and fauna, making it a rewarding experience for nature enthusiasts.
Trail Conditions and Recommendations
The trail is predominantly flat with well-maintained paths, making it accessible year-round. However, certain sections, especially around Soesterveen, can be wet and muddy after heavy rains. It's advisable to wear appropriate footwear and check weather conditions before setting out. Additionally, while the trail is easy to follow, carrying a navigation tool like HiiKER can provide added assurance.
Amenities and Facilities
Along the route, there are several spots to rest and enjoy the scenery. In Birkhoven, near the parking area, you'll find Out2Enjoy, a café open from Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, offering refreshments and light meals. It's a perfect place to relax after completing the loop.
