Loop
“Wander through wildflower-filled wetlands, stately woodlands, and golden dunes on this enchanting circular trail.”
Nestled in the heart of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, this gentle 8 km (about 5 miles) loop begins near the Soestduinen train station, making it easily accessible by public transport from Utrecht or Amersfoort. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Soestduinen area, close to the intersection of Soesterbergsestraat and Foekenlaan, a well-known entry point for local walkers.
Getting Started and Navigation
The trail is flat, with virtually no elevation gain, making it suitable for families, beginners, and anyone seeking a leisurely walk. The route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS guidance.
Soesterveen: A Rare Dutch Peat Bog
Within the first kilometer, the path leads into the Soesterveen, one of the last remaining peat bogs in the Netherlands. This unique wetland is a haven for birdlife, including reed warblers and marsh harriers. Boardwalks and observation points allow for close-up views without disturbing the delicate ecosystem. In spring and early summer, the area bursts with wildflowers and dragonflies.
Woodlands and Estate Pijnenburg
After about 3 km (1.8 miles), the landscape transitions into the stately woodlands of Landgoed Pijnenburg. Towering beech and oak trees line the wide, sandy paths, and the forest floor is often carpeted with ferns and bluebells. The estate itself dates back to the 17th century and is still privately owned, but the trails are open to the public. Keep an eye out for roe deer and red squirrels darting through the undergrowth.
Historical Highlights
Midway through the loop, you’ll pass close to the old Pijnenburg manor house, visible through the trees. The estate played a role in regional history as a refuge during times of conflict and is part of the larger network of Utrechtse Heuvelrug estates, which were developed by wealthy merchants and nobility as country retreats.
Returning via the Sand Dunes
The final stretch of the loop brings you back through the Soestduinen, a striking area of open sand dunes and heathland. This landscape is a remnant of the last Ice Age and offers a stark contrast to the lush woodlands. Children often enjoy the sandy slopes, and the open terrain is ideal for spotting kestrels and buzzards overhead.
Practical Tips
There are several benches and picnic spots along the route, particularly near the Soesterveen and at the edge of the dunes. While there are no cafés directly on the trail, the nearby village of Soestduinen offers a few options for refreshments before or after your walk. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in nature reserve sections.
