Loop
“Stroll through royal history, ancient forests, and blooming heath on this gentle, storybook Soest loop.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Soest, Netherlands, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near Soestdijk Palace, a historic royal residence, which is easily reached by train to Soestdijk station or by car with parking available at the palace grounds or nearby public lots.
Getting There Arriving by public transport is straightforward: take a train to Soestdijk station, which is just a short walk from the start of the loop. For those driving, Soestdijk Palace (Amsterdamsestraatweg 1, 3743 AB Baarn) serves as a recognizable landmark and offers ample parking options.
Trail Experience and Navigation The route follows sections of the Marskramerpad, a long-distance path that traces the footsteps of medieval traders, and the Koninklijke Weg, or Royal Road, which historically connected royal estates. The terrain is predominantly flat, with well-maintained paths through mixed woodland, open heath, and stretches of manicured parkland. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and up-to-date trail information, HiiKER is recommended.
Landmarks and Points of Interest Within the first kilometer, you’ll pass the stately Soestdijk Palace, a highlight of Dutch royal history. The palace gardens, with their formal landscaping and reflective ponds, are visible from the trail and worth a detour if time allows. Continuing north, the path weaves through the serene Baarnse Bos, a forested area known for its ancient beech avenues and occasional deer sightings.
At approximately 4 km (2.5 miles), the trail skirts the edge of the Lage Vuursche, a charming village famous for its traditional pancake houses and historic church. This is a good spot for a rest or a snack. The area is also home to red squirrels, woodpeckers, and a variety of songbirds, making it a delight for wildlife enthusiasts.
Nature and Wildlife The loop traverses a mosaic of habitats, from sandy heathlands dotted with juniper to lush deciduous woods. In spring and summer, wildflowers line the path, and butterflies are abundant. The forests are home to roe deer, foxes, and a rich diversity of birds, including tawny owls and nuthatches. The open heath areas provide excellent opportunities for spotting lizards basking on sunny days.
Historical Significance This region is steeped in history, with the Marskramerpad tracing routes used by medieval merchants transporting goods between towns. The Koninklijke Weg, meanwhile, was once reserved for royal carriages traveling between Soestdijk Palace and other royal estates. The landscape is dotted with remnants of this past, including old milestones, ornate gates, and the occasional hunting lodge.
Practical Tips The entire loop is well-marked and mostly shaded, making it comfortable even on warmer days. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the palace and in the Baarnse Bos. Public toilets and refreshment stops are available in Lage Vuursche and at Soestdijk Palace. The flat, even surface is suitable for families, casual walkers, and those with limited mobility.
