“From wind-sculpted Soester sands to hushed Heuvelrug estates, a long, gently rolling wander—soft-footed in places.”
This is a long, low-relief day (or a relaxed 2-day) walk through two very different faces of inland Utrecht: the open, wind-shaped sand of the Soester Duinen (Lange Duinen + Korte Duinen) and the wooded estate-and-ridge landscapes around Doorn/Driebergen on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Expect ~48 km / ~30 mi with very little net elevation gain (roughly ~0 m / ~0 ft overall), but plenty of “micro-undulation” in the dunes where soft sand makes the effort feel bigger than the profile suggests. The route name points to key waypoints/areas: Beerketaantje, Hazewater, and Oude Postweg—so plan for a full day out with steady pacing, or split it with a stop in/near Driebergen or Doorn.
Because the start point wasn’t fully specified (“near …”), the most practical access for the Lange/Korte Duinen section is usually around Soestduinen / Soesterberg: - By train + bus: Travel to Amersfoort Centraal or Utrecht Centraal, then connect toward Soest/Soesterberg. Many hikers use rail to Soest Zuid or nearby stations and link in on foot; if your exact start is closer to the dunes’ main access points, buses toward Soestduinen/Soesterberg can shorten the road-walk. - By car: A common, well-known access point for the Korte Duinen is the area by Restaurant De Korte Duinen (Birkstraat area, Soest), with parking nearby. Another frequently used access is along Soesterbergsestraat (Soestduinen/Soest) where signed entrances lead straight into the sand.
If you share the start coordinates (lon/lat), they can be converted to the nearest clear landmark/address and the approach can be tightened to the correct stop/parking area.
You’ll want HiiKER loaded with the full track before you set off—this landscape has lots of crisscrossing sandy paths and forest lanes that look interchangeable, especially where dunes spill into pine woods.
Although the hike is rated Easy, the Soester Duinen are “living sand” in places—wide, open drift-sand where footing ranges from firm to calf-burning soft. The dunes are recognized as a rare inland drift-sand landscape and have been designated an aardkundig monument (geological monument) in Utrecht. (ns.nl)
Once you transition toward the Utrechtse Heuvelrug around Doorn/Driebergen, the walking typically becomes faster: forest tracks, estate lanes, and older routes (including stretches referred to as Oude Postweg, literally “Old Post Road”), where surfaces are usually compact and consistent.
0–12 km / 0–7.5 mi: Korte Duinen → Lange Duinen (open sand + pine edges)
You’ll start with the most visually striking terrain early: broad sand bowls, dune ridges, and pine fringes. In dry spells, sand can be deep; after rain, it firms up but can hide puddled low spots. The contrast is the point here—open “mini-desert” views one moment, then shaded forest margins the next. The dunes’ shapes and blowouts are part of an active drift-sand system, which is exactly why the area is protected for its geology. (geologievannederland.nl)
12–25 km / 7.5–15.5 mi: Forest connectors and quieter lanes (navigation-heavy)
This middle stretch is where people most often lose time: multiple parallel tracks, subtle junctions, and long straight forest lines that can feel identical. Keep an eye on HiiKER at every major crossing and don’t assume the “main-looking” track is correct—horse tracks, maintenance roads, and informal sandy cut-throughs can all appear equally worn.
25–38 km / 15.5–23.5 mi: Hazewater area (estate woodland + water features)
Around Hazewater, expect a more “parkland/estate” feel—mixed woodland, calmer walking, and a higher chance of seeing birds around
