Point-to-Point
“Wander through blooming meadows, ancient paths, and panoramic hilltops on a journey rich in color and history.”
Starting from the picturesque village of Slenaken, nestled in the rolling hills of South Limburg, this 16 km (about 10 miles) route to Mariadorp offers a gentle introduction to the Dutch countryside, with an elevation gain of approximately 200 metres (650 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the Slenaken village center, close to the historic Sint-Remigiuskerk church, making it easy to find for those arriving by car or public transport. Buses from Maastricht and Gulpen regularly serve Slenaken, and parking is available near the church for those driving.
Through Pastoral Valleys and Historic Paths
The route quickly immerses you in the lush Gulp Valley, where meadows are dotted with grazing cattle and the gentle sound of the Gulp river accompanies your first steps. Early on, you’ll follow Papen Weg, a centuries-old path once used by priests and smugglers moving between the Netherlands and Belgium. The landscape here is a patchwork of orchards, hedgerows, and wildflower meadows, especially vibrant in spring and early summer. Keep an eye out for kestrels hovering above the fields and, if you’re lucky, the rare European green woodpecker.
Climbing Ezels Weg and Panoramic Vistas
After about 5 km (3 miles), the trail ascends gently along Ezels Weg, a historic drovers’ road. The climb is gradual, gaining most of the hike’s 200 metres of elevation, and rewards you with sweeping views over the Limburg hills and, on clear days, glimpses into Belgium and Germany. This section is particularly scenic in autumn, when the beech and oak woodlands blaze with color. Pause at the top to take in the panorama—this is one of the highest points in the region.
Cultural Landmarks and Village Life
Descending from the ridge, the route passes through the hamlet of Epen, known for its half-timbered farmhouses and traditional Limburg hospitality. Here, you’ll find opportunities to stop for local refreshments, such as vlaai (fruit tart) or a regional beer. The trail continues through a mosaic of small woodlands and open fields, crossing several ancient hollow ways—sunken lanes carved by centuries of foot and cart traffic.
Wildlife and Natural Highlights
The area is rich in biodiversity. Along the hedgerows, look for songbirds like the yellowhammer and linnet, while the meadows may host butterflies such as the marbled white and common blue. In wetter areas, you might spot frogs and newts, especially after rain. The region’s limestone soils support rare orchids in late spring and early summer.
Approaching Mariadorp
The final stretch leads you gently downhill toward Mariadorp, a quiet village on the outskirts of Eijsden. The route ends near the Mariadorp Chapel, a local landmark and a peaceful spot to reflect on your journey. From here, buses connect to Eijsden and Maastricht, making your return journey straightforward.
Navigation and Preparation
The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence and to explore alternative paths or nearby points of interest, use HiiKER for up-to-date trail maps and navigation. The terrain is mostly easy, with well-maintained paths and only a few short, steeper sections. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some paths can become muddy. Bring water and snacks, as services are limited outside the villages.
This hike offers a gentle but rewarding exploration of South Limburg’s unique landscape, blending natural beauty, rural culture, and centuries of cross-border history.
