Loop
“Wander beneath ancient trees and across rolling hills, where woodland magic meets sweeping borderland views.”
Starting near the village of Slenaken in the Dutch province of Limburg, this 13 km (about 8 miles) circular route with approximately 200 metres (650 feet) of elevation gain offers a gentle yet immersive exploration of the rolling hills and lush woodlands of the Dutch-Belgian border region. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Dorpsstraat and Heijenratherweg in Slenaken, making it accessible by car with parking available in the village. For those arriving by public transport, buses from Maastricht and Gulpen stop at Slenaken, from where it’s a short walk to the starting point.
Woodland Wonders and Panoramic Vistas
The route quickly leads you into the Onderste Bosch, a serene forested area known for its ancient beech and oak trees. In spring and early summer, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers, and the air is alive with birdsong. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional roe deer darting through the undergrowth. The path undulates gently, with the first significant ascent coming after about 2 km (1.2 miles), offering glimpses through the trees of the surrounding hills.
Emerging from the woods, the trail follows the Haenenbergpad, a scenic ridge path that provides sweeping views over the Gulp Valley and the patchwork of fields and orchards that characterize this region. On clear days, you can see as far as the Ardennes in Belgium. The landscape here is dotted with traditional half-timbered farmhouses and small chapels, reflecting the area’s rich agricultural and religious heritage.
Bosreservaat Teuvenerberg and Cross-Border Nature
At roughly the halfway point, around 6.5 km (4 miles), you enter the Bosreservaat Teuvenerberg, a protected nature reserve straddling the Dutch-Belgian border. This area is notable for its biodiversity, with rare orchids, butterflies, and a variety of woodland birds. The reserve is managed to preserve its unique limestone grasslands and ancient woodland, and interpretive signs along the way provide insight into the local flora and fauna.
The trail briefly crosses into Belgium, passing near the hamlet of Teuven, where you can spot the Romanesque St. Peter’s Church, a landmark dating back to the 12th century. The cross-border nature of the hike is a reminder of the region’s complex history, shaped by centuries of shifting borders and cultural exchange.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The route is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for peace of mind, especially at junctions where multiple trails intersect. Paths are mostly unpaved but well-maintained, with some sections that can become muddy after rain. Sturdy walking shoes are advisable, and trekking poles may be helpful for the short but occasionally steep ascents and descents.
Practical Tips and Points of Interest
Water and refreshments are available in Slenaken and Teuven, where several cafés and inns offer local specialties. The hike is suitable for families and those new to hill walking, thanks to its moderate distance and gentle gradients. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in nature reserves.
This route offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and cross-border intrigue, making it a rewarding day out in one of the most picturesque corners of the Netherlands and Belgium.
