Loop
“Wander windswept dunes, vibrant wildflower meadows, and storied dikes on this colourful North Holland coastal loop.”
Starting from the charming coastal village of Callantsoog, this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) loop hike with virtually no elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet) is a gentle journey through the unique landscapes of North Holland. The trailhead is conveniently located near the main entrance to Callantsoog Beach, close to Dorpsplein, the village’s central square, making it easily accessible whether you arrive by car or public transport. Callantsoog is well-served by regional buses from Schagen railway station, which connects to major Dutch cities. If driving, parking is available at the large public lot near the beach entrance.
Dunes, Dikes, and Coastal Vistas
Heading south from the village, the route quickly immerses you in the sweeping dunes that define this stretch of the Dutch North Sea coast. The Zuidschinkeldijk, a historic dike, guides you through a landscape shaped by centuries of water management. These dikes are a testament to the Netherlands’ ongoing relationship with the sea, protecting the low-lying hinterland from flooding. As you walk, look for interpretive signs that detail the history of these earthworks and the vital role they play in local life.
The trail meanders through the Zwanenwater nature reserve, a highlight for birdwatchers and nature lovers. This protected area is home to rare orchids, grazing Highland cattle, and a wealth of birdlife, including spoonbills, avocets, and marsh harriers. In spring and early summer, the meadows burst into color with wildflowers, while autumn brings migrating birds. The flat, sandy paths are easy underfoot, making this route suitable for families and casual walkers.
Westerduinweg and Coastal Heritage
Turning west, the route follows Westerduinweg, a quiet road that parallels the coastline. Here, the landscape opens up to reveal panoramic views of the North Sea and the wide, sandy beaches for which Callantsoog is famous. The area’s history as one of the oldest seaside resorts in the Netherlands is evident in the traditional beach pavilions and the remnants of WWII bunkers hidden among the dunes. These bunkers, part of the Atlantic Wall, offer a glimpse into the region’s wartime past.
The final stretch leads you back toward Callantsoog, passing through a patchwork of bulb fields that, in spring, are ablaze with tulips and daffodils. The gentle terrain and well-marked paths make navigation straightforward, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any seasonal trail updates.
Practical Information
There are several opportunities to stop for refreshments in Callantsoog, both at the start and end of the hike. Public toilets and water refill stations are available near the beach entrance. The entire route is exposed, so bring sun protection and windproof clothing, especially outside the summer months. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in nature reserve sections.
This easy, scenic loop is ideal for those seeking a relaxed coastal walk with a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and local history, all within easy reach of the village amenities.
