Point-to-Point
“Winding through golden dunes and blooming heath, this tranquil trail reveals coastal wonders and hidden history.”
Starting from the welcoming grounds of Residence Koningshof, just outside Bergen aan Zee, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) route offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for most hikers. The trail winds through the scenic North Holland Dune Reserve, a protected area known for its shifting sands, coastal heath, and rich biodiversity.
Getting There
Residence Koningshof is easily reached by car, with parking available on site or nearby. For those using public transport, take the train to Alkmaar station, then transfer to bus 866 towards Bergen aan Zee. Disembark at the “Bergen aan Zee, Zeeweg” stop, which is a short walk from the trailhead.
Trail Experience and Navigation
Setting out from the edge of the dunes, the path quickly immerses you in a landscape shaped by centuries of wind and sea. The Slangen Weg, or “Snake Way,” is aptly named for its winding course through the dunes, offering ever-changing views of sandy ridges and pockets of pine and oak woodland. The trail is well-marked, but for added confidence and route details, HiiKER provides reliable navigation and up-to-date trail information.
Nature and Wildlife
The North Holland Dune Reserve is a haven for wildlife. Keep an eye out for grazing Highland cattle and Konik horses, which help maintain the open character of the dunes. Birdlife is abundant, with skylarks, kestrels, and the occasional spoonbill making appearances, especially in spring and early summer. The heathland sections, particularly along the Heidepad, burst into color with purple heather in late summer, attracting butterflies and bees.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
About halfway along the route, the trail intersects with several sandy paths leading deeper into the reserve. Here, you’ll find remnants of World War II bunkers, silent witnesses to the region’s strategic importance during the conflict. Informational signs provide context about the Atlantic Wall defenses and the area’s wartime history.
As you approach Het Zeehuis, the landscape opens up to reveal sweeping views toward the North Sea. Het Zeehuis itself is a historic children’s holiday home, now serving as a group accommodation and a recognizable landmark at the edge of the dunes.
Practical Tips
The entire route is on sandy or packed earth paths, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended. There are no significant climbs, but the loose sand can be tiring in places. Water and snacks should be brought along, as there are limited facilities until you reach Bergen aan Zee. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain sections to protect wildlife.
This easy, family-friendly hike offers a blend of natural beauty, subtle historical intrigue, and the invigorating air of the Dutch coast, making it a rewarding outing for walkers of all ages.
