Loop
“Wander through blooming heath, grazing sheep, and hidden wildlife in Drenthe’s tranquil, storied heart.”
Starting from the vicinity of the Bezoekerscentrum Dwingelderveld, this loop hike covers approximately 8 km (about 5 miles) with a gentle elevation gain of around 100 metres (328 feet), making it accessible for most walkers, including families and those new to hiking. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available at the Bezoekerscentrum Dwingelderveld, located at Benderse 22, 7963 RA Ruinen, Netherlands. For those using public transport, buses from Hoogeveen or Meppel stop at Ruinen, from where it’s a short walk or cycle to the visitor center.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route forms a scenic loop through the heart of Dwingelderveld National Park, the largest wet heathland in Western Europe. Navigation is straightforward, with well-marked paths and clear signage throughout. For those seeking extra confidence, the HiiKER app provides detailed mapping and GPS tracking for the entire loop.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
Shortly after leaving the visitor center, the path meanders through expansive heathlands, especially vibrant in late summer when the heather blooms in shades of purple. At roughly 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll reach Frederiks Blink, a historic raised observation point. This spot offers panoramic views over the heath and is a great place to pause for photos or a snack. The area is named after Frederik, a local landowner from the 19th century, who played a role in the early conservation efforts of the region.
Continuing on, the trail passes several traditional sheepfolds, where the Drenthe Heath Sheep graze. These flocks are integral to the park’s ecosystem, maintaining the open heathland and supporting a variety of rare plant and insect species. Interpretive signs along the route provide insight into the cultural and ecological history of the area.
Nature and Wildlife
Dwingelderveld is renowned for its biodiversity. Keep an eye out for cranes, curlews, and the rare black grouse, especially in the quieter stretches of the loop. The wetlands and pools attract dragonflies and amphibians, while the surrounding woodlands are home to roe deer and foxes. Early mornings or late afternoons offer the best chances for wildlife sightings.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The paths are mostly flat and well-maintained, with a mix of sandy tracks and boardwalks over wetter sections. After heavy rain, some areas can become muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are benches and picnic spots at intervals, and the visitor center at the start offers restrooms, a café, and information displays.
Getting There and Facilities
By car, follow signs to Dwingelderveld National Park and park at the Bezoekerscentrum Dwingelderveld. For public transport, take a train to Hoogeveen or Meppel, then transfer to a local bus toward Ruinen. From the Ruinen bus stop, it’s about 2 km (1.2 miles) to the visitor center, which can be walked or cycled.
This loop offers a gentle introduction to the unique landscapes and rich history of Drenthe, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the tranquility and natural beauty of the Dutch heathlands.
