Trail Overview
Starting from the parking area, a yellow-marked connector trail leads to the main loop. The loop comprises two primary sections: the White Trail and the Orange Trail.
- White Trail: This segment meanders through a hardwood forest, showcasing seasonal flora such as blooming blueberry bushes and towering fiddleheads in spring. Be prepared for wet and muddy patches, especially during wetter months, with skunk cabbage prevalent in these areas. Wooden planks are placed over particularly muddy sections to aid hikers. A notable feature along this trail is a small, rust-colored stream, adding to the trail's natural charm.
- Orange Trail: Extending approximately 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) one way, this trail runs southward, narrowing at points where residential areas and Camp Edey, a Girl Scout camp, are visible. The trail offers views of Sans Souci Lake, which was transformed into a series of lakes in the mid-1800s by dams constructed for cranberry farming. As you progress, the landscape transitions from hardwoods to serene pine forests, with a soft carpet of pine needles underfoot enhancing the tranquil atmosphere.
Natural Features and Wildlife
The preserve is rich in biodiversity. Hikers can observe a variety of plant species, including skunk cabbage in wet areas and blueberry bushes along the White Trail. The lakes and streams attract diverse wildlife, offering opportunities for birdwatching and spotting local fauna.
Historical Significance
The Sans Souci lakes were originally a single body of water until the mid-19th century when small dams were constructed to create a cranberry farm. Today, these lakes remain a beautiful and undisturbed feature of the preserve.
