Loop
“Follow the Waterstaatspad from village edge to dunes, where big skies and birdlife meet human-made dikes.”
This easy, mostly level loop is a classic way to see how Schiermonnikoog’s landscape was shaped by water management: you’ll walk from the village edge into dune country and along the Waterstaatspad—named for the Dutch water authorities—where dikes, drainage, and “reclaimed” edges of land tell the story of people trying to guide a constantly shifting Wadden island. Expect a mix of firm paths, sandy stretches, and open, wind-exposed sections with big skies and nonstop birdlife.
Distance & elevation - Around 9 km (5.6 mi) - ~0 m (0 ft) elevation gain (any “ups and downs” are gentle dune undulations rather than true climbs)
Where the hike starts (nearest landmark) - A practical start point for this loop is near Information Centre Het Baken, Reeweg 9, 9166 PW Schiermonnikoog (on the village side of the National Park and close to the Westerplas area). ([np-schiermonnikoog.nl](https://www.np-schiermonnikoog.nl/en/natuur/landschap/?utm_source=openai)) If you’re using HiiKER, match your start to the loop’s trailhead pin; on the ground, Het Baken is an easy landmark to navigate to.
By car (to the ferry) - Drive to the mainland ferry terminal at Zeedijk 9, 9976 VM Lauwersoog (Netherlands), park there, then walk onto the ferry (Schiermonnikoog is effectively car-free for visitors unless you have a special exemption). ([schiermonnikoog.info](https://schiermonnikoog.info/nl/route.php?utm_source=openai))
By public transport (to the ferry) - Trains run to Groningen or Leeuwarden; from there, buses connect to Lauwersoog in sync with most ferry sailings: - From Groningen: Qbuzz bus 163 to Lauwersoog - From Leeuwarden/Dokkum: bus 51 to Lauwersoog ([wpd.nl](https://www.wpd.nl/en/schiermonnikoog/traveling-by-public-transport?utm_source=openai)) - After arriving on Schiermonnikoog, island buses meet regular ferry arrivals and can take you toward the village (or you can walk/cycle). ([wpd.nl](https://www.wpd.nl/en/schiermonnikoog/traveling-by-public-transport?utm_source=openai))
Ferry notes - The regular ferry crossing takes about 45 minutes; a fast ferry option exists (typically passengers only, no bikes). ([wpd.nl](https://www.wpd.nl/en/schiermonnikoog/our-crossings/?utm_source=openai))
From the village edge, you’ll quickly notice how “managed” nature and wild nature sit side-by-side here. Paths are generally well-defined and easy to follow, with long, straight segments where wind can be the main challenge. Underfoot conditions commonly include: - Packed gravel or firm path near village/nature access points - Sandy track where dunes begin to dominate - Dike-top or drainage-side walking along the Waterstaatspad character sections (open, exposed, and often breezy)
Because the island is flat, pacing is straightforward—this is a great loop for relaxed walking, frequent stops, and wildlife watching without worrying about climbs.
Westerplas (freshwater lake + bird infrastructure) One of the standout features you’re likely to pass near (or deliberately detour to, depending on the exact HiiKER line) is the Westerplas, the island’s key freshwater area. Historically, this area was a salt marsh (Westerkwelder) that was cut off from the sea in 1964, creating the freshwater lake seen today. It’s also important for the island’s drinking water supply. ([np-schiermonnikoog.nl](https://www.np-schiermonnikoog.nl/en/natuur/landschap/?utm_source=openai)) - Look for the bird-watching hut and viewing areas: they’re designed to let birds approach closely while keeping people at a respectful distance. Birdlife (year-round, with big seasonal peaks) Schiermonnikoog is a major bird island—bring binoculars if you have them. Around wetlands and reedbeds you may see or hear: - Spoonbills
