Loop
“Riverside paths and wildflower meadows lead you through Oosterbeek’s serene landscapes and storied history.”
Starting from the outskirts of the charming Dutch village of Oosterbeek, just west of Arnhem, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) loop weaves together the Scheepstrapad, Kronkelpad, and Cornetis Visserpad. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is ideal for hikers of all abilities, including families and those seeking a leisurely day outdoors.
Getting There
Oosterbeek is well-connected by public transport. From Arnhem Centraal, frequent trains reach Oosterbeek station in under 10 minutes. The trailhead is a short walk from the station, making it accessible for those arriving by train. For drivers, parking is available near the station and at several small lots around the village center.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route forms a gentle loop through the lush floodplains and wooded banks of the Lower Rhine (Nederrijn). The terrain is mostly flat, with well-maintained paths that can become muddy after rain. Hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail conditions, as the paths occasionally branch off into smaller tracks.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
- Scheepstrapad: This section traces the old towpath along the river, where horses once pulled barges upstream. At about 2 km (1.2 miles) in, you’ll pass remnants of historic mooring posts and interpretive signs detailing the area’s shipping heritage. - Kronkelpad: Winding through willow groves and open meadows, this stretch is known for its birdlife. In spring and summer, look for storks, herons, and kingfishers. The meadows are dotted with wildflowers, and benches offer peaceful spots to rest and watch the river. - Cornetis Visserpad: Named after a local resistance hero from World War II, this path skirts the edge of Oosterbeek’s woodland. At around 7 km (4.3 miles), you’ll find a small memorial plaque and information about the area’s role during Operation Market Garden in 1944. The woods here are home to deer, foxes, and a variety of songbirds.
Nature and Wildlife
The floodplain landscape supports a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Expect to see grazing cattle and Konik horses, which help maintain the open grasslands. The riverbanks are lined with reeds and water-loving plants, attracting dragonflies and butterflies in warmer months. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times for wildlife spotting.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
The entire loop is well-marked, but after heavy rain, sections can be waterlogged—waterproof boots are recommended. There are no significant climbs, making the route accessible for most fitness levels. Bring water and snacks, as there are limited facilities directly on the trail, though Oosterbeek village offers cafes and shops for refreshments before or after your hike.
Historical Significance
Oosterbeek and its surroundings are steeped in history, most notably as a key site during the Battle of Arnhem in World War II. The area’s memorials and preserved landscapes offer a poignant reminder of its past, and hikers interested in history may wish to visit the nearby Airborne Museum, just a short detour from the trail.
This loop offers a blend of riverside tranquility, rich wildlife, and historical resonance, making it a rewarding day out in the Dutch countryside.
