Loop
“Wander through sunlit meadows, whispering woods, and shimmering waterways where wildlife and history intertwine.”
Starting from the edge of Woldlakebos, near the village of Ossenzijl in the province of Friesland, this loop trail covers approximately 10 km (about 6.2 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available near the entrance to Woldlakebos, close to the intersection of Meenteweg and Hoogeweg. For those using public transport, buses from Steenwijk or Heerenveen stop in Ossenzijl, from where it’s a short walk to the trailhead.
Navigating the Route
The loop follows a well-marked path, beginning along Meenteweg and looping through the tranquil Boonspolder before returning via Hoogeweg. The route is flat throughout, with well-maintained gravel and dirt paths suitable for walking year-round. For navigation, the HiiKER app provides detailed mapping and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track even in the more secluded sections of the trail.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
Woldlakebos is part of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, one of the largest peat bog areas in northwestern Europe. The landscape is a patchwork of reed beds, open water, and woodland, shaped by centuries of peat cutting. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through dense alder and willow woods, where the air is filled with birdsong. Look out for marsh harriers gliding overhead and, if you’re lucky, the elusive otter, which has made a comeback in these wetlands.
As you enter Boonspolder, the scenery opens up to wide, grassy meadows and canals lined with reeds. This area is a haven for waterfowl, including grebes, herons, and the occasional stork. In spring and summer, the meadows are dotted with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and dragonflies. The flat terrain and open vistas make this section particularly scenic, especially in the early morning or late afternoon light.
Cultural and Historical Context
The region’s history is deeply tied to water management and peat extraction. The intricate network of ditches and canals you’ll see along the route was created to drain the land for peat harvesting, which began in the Middle Ages. Remnants of this history are visible in the old drainage channels and the traditional reed-thatched farmhouses scattered near the trail. Ossenzijl itself was once a key point for transporting peat by boat, and the village’s historic lock is worth a short detour.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
With no significant elevation gain (0 metres/0 feet), the trail is rated as easy and is suitable for families, casual walkers, and those seeking a relaxed day outdoors. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain, as some sections can be muddy. There are benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the water’s edge, offering peaceful places to rest and enjoy the scenery.
Facilities are limited along the route, so bring water and snacks. The nearest shops and cafes are in Ossenzijl, where you can also find visitor information about the national park. Dogs are allowed on the trail but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife.
Getting There
By car, follow signs to Ossenzijl and park near the Woldlakebos entrance at Meenteweg. For public transport, take a train to Steenwijk, then a bus to Ossenzijl; from the bus stop, it’s a 10-minute walk to the trailhead. The area is well-signposted, and the start of the loop is easy to locate.
