Loop
“Wander through blooming heather, tranquil woodlands, and echoes of history on this scenic North Brabant loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Vught, just north of the Ijzeren Man recreational lake, this 17 km (about 10.5 miles) loop offers a flat, easy walk through the varied landscapes of North Brabant. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Ijzeren Man lake, a well-known local landmark, with parking available at the main entrance (Boslaan, Vught). For those arriving by public transport, Vught train station is about 2 km (1.2 miles) away, with local buses and a pleasant walk through the town leading directly to the starting point.
Route Overview and Navigation
The route follows a mix of forest paths, sand tracks, and quiet country lanes, weaving through the leafy outskirts of Vught and Helvoirt. Navigation is straightforward, but as some sections cross unmarked woodland or agricultural land, using HiiKER for real-time trail guidance is highly recommended. The total elevation gain is negligible—less than 10 metres (about 30 feet)—making it accessible for all fitness levels.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
The trail skirts the Ijzeren Man lake, a popular spot for swimming and birdwatching, before heading into the expansive Vughtse Heide. This heathland is dotted with Scots pine, birch, and oak, and in late summer, the purple heather blooms attract butterflies and bees. Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, especially in the quieter stretches between Vijmense Weg and Drongelens Pad.
Historical and Cultural Points
This region is steeped in history. The Ijzeren Man lake itself was created in the late 19th century as a sand excavation site for railway construction, and its name—meaning “Iron Man”—refers to the steam-powered dredging machine once used here. As you follow Drongelens Pad, you’ll pass close to the Drongelens Kanaal, a canal built in the early 20th century to manage water levels in the low-lying polder landscape. The area around Helvoirtse Weg brings you near the village of Helvoirt, known for its historic church and connections to Vincent van Gogh, whose father was a pastor here.
Trail Conditions and Facilities
Most of the route is well-maintained, with sandy and forested sections that can become muddy after rain. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the lake and in the forest clearings. Toilets and refreshments are available at the Ijzeren Man recreation area, and there are cafes in Vught and Helvoirt for a post-hike meal or drink.
Planning Tips
The loop can be walked in either direction, and there are several access points if you wish to shorten the route. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in nature reserves. The trail is suitable for families and beginner hikers, with no technical challenges or steep climbs. For the best experience, bring a map on HiiKER, especially if you plan to explore side trails or detours into the heathland.
