Loop
“Wander through grand estates, lush forests, and tranquil ponds where Dutch history and nature intertwine beautifully.”
Nestled in the heart of North Holland, this 18 km (about 11 miles) loop weaves through the stately estates and lush forests between ’s-Graveland and Hilversum, with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for most hikers. The trailhead is conveniently located near the entrance to Buitenplaats Schaep en Burgh, a historic estate at Noordereinde 56, 1243 JJ ’s-Graveland, which is easily reached by bus from Hilversum or Amsterdam, or by car with parking available nearby.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, take a train to Hilversum station, then transfer to bus 106 or 121 towards ’s-Graveland. Disembark at the “Noordereinde, Schaep en Burgh” stop, which is directly adjacent to the estate’s entrance. Drivers can follow the N201 or N236, with clear signage leading to ’s-Graveland and parking options at the estate or along Noordereinde.
Historic Estates and Gardens
The route begins at Schaep en Burgh, a 17th-century country house surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens and water features. This estate, along with neighboring Gooilust and Boekesteyn, forms part of the “Buitenplaatsen van ’s-Graveland,” a collection of grand homes built by Amsterdam’s wealthy merchants. The trail meanders through these estates, offering glimpses of ornate gates, stately avenues of beech and oak, and tranquil ponds. At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass the entrance to Gooilust, renowned for its botanical garden and rare tree species.
Spanderswoud Forest and Wildlife
Beyond the manicured grounds, the path enters Spanderswoud, a dense woodland managed by Natuurmonumenten. Here, the landscape shifts to a more natural setting, with winding dirt paths beneath towering trees. Birdlife is abundant—look for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and tawny owls, especially in the early morning. Roe deer and foxes are occasionally spotted in the quieter stretches. The forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers in spring, and mushrooms add color in autumn.
Navigating the Loop
The trail is well-marked, but for added confidence, download the route on HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and waypoints. The loop is mostly flat, with a total elevation gain of less than 10 meters (about 30 feet), making it suitable for families and those seeking a relaxed pace. At around 9 km (5.6 miles), you’ll cross the picturesque ’s-Gravelandsevaart canal, a perfect spot for a picnic or a rest.
Cultural and Natural Highlights
Midway through the hike, the path skirts the edge of Hilversum’s Spanderswoud, where you’ll find remnants of old peat-cutting ditches and traditional Dutch polder landscapes. Interpretive signs along the route explain the area’s transformation from marshland to aristocratic retreat. The estates are open to the public, and several have visitor centers or tea rooms—Gooilust’s is particularly inviting for a mid-hike break.
Final Stretch and Return
The final section leads back through the leafy avenues of Boekesteyn and Schaep en Burgh, with opportunities to spot kingfishers along the estate ponds. The loop returns you to your starting point, where you can explore the gardens further or visit the nearby visitor center for more information about the region’s history and conservation efforts.
This loop offers a unique blend of Dutch cultural heritage and natural beauty, with easy access, gentle terrain, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy both history and wildlife.
