Loop
“Amid grand estates and blooming meadows, this scenic loop glows with Dutch charm and tranquil beauty.”
Starting from the picturesque grounds near the historic Schaep en Burgh estate in 's-Graveland, this loop trail covers approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for all skill levels. The route is a blend of the Schaep and Burgh Route and the Kwakel Route, weaving through a landscape rich in Dutch heritage and natural beauty.
Getting There The trailhead is easily reached by public transport: take a train to Hilversum station, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 106 or 121) toward 's-Graveland, alighting at the “Noordereinde, Schaep en Burgh” stop. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Schaep en Burgh estate, located at Noordereinde 56, 1243 JJ 's-Graveland.
Historic Estates and Waterways The walk begins at the gates of Schaep en Burgh, a stately 17th-century country house surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens and ancient trees. This area is part of the “s-Gravelandse Buitenplaatsen,” a collection of grand estates built by Amsterdam’s wealthy merchants. As you follow the well-marked paths, you’ll pass by ornate bridges, reflective ponds, and tree-lined avenues that echo the grandeur of the Dutch Golden Age.
Nature and Wildlife The route meanders through a mosaic of woodlands, open meadows, and tranquil waterways. In spring and summer, the meadows burst with wildflowers, while the woods are home to woodpeckers, tawny owls, and a variety of songbirds. The ponds and canals attract herons, kingfishers, and sometimes even roe deer at dawn or dusk. The area is managed by Natuurmonumenten, ensuring the preservation of its unique flora and fauna.
Key Landmarks and Points of Interest - At roughly 1.5 km (0.9 miles), you’ll reach the Kwakelbrug, a charming wooden drawbridge that offers a classic Dutch photo opportunity. - Around the halfway mark, the trail skirts the edge of the Boekesteyn estate, another historic manor with a visitor center and café—ideal for a rest stop. - The path continues through shaded beech and oak groves, with interpretive signs detailing the history of the estates and the region’s transformation from peat bogs to aristocratic retreats.
Trail Conditions and Navigation The terrain is flat and mostly surfaced with gravel or compacted earth, suitable for walking shoes or trainers. The route is well-signposted, but for added confidence and to explore side trails, use HiiKER for up-to-date maps and navigation.
Accessibility and Facilities The loop is suitable for families, casual walkers, and those with limited mobility, though some sections may be muddy after rain. Restrooms and refreshments are available at the Boekesteyn visitor center, and benches are scattered throughout the estates for breaks.
This gentle loop offers a unique blend of Dutch cultural history and serene natural landscapes, making it a rewarding outing in any season.
