Loop
“Wander through a tapestry of stately estates, wildflower woods, and tranquil ponds echoing centuries past.”
Starting from the leafy outskirts of Hilversum, near the well-known Hilversumse Wasmeer nature reserve, this loop trail covers approximately 15 km (about 9.3 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for most fitness levels. The trail weaves through the tranquil landscapes of the Bantam, Jagtlust, and Stofbergen estates, each with its own unique charm and history.
Getting There
For those arriving by public transport, Hilversum is well-connected by train from Amsterdam, Utrecht, and other major Dutch cities. From Hilversum Central Station, local buses or a short taxi ride will bring you to the Wasmeer area, where the trail begins. If driving, parking is available near the entrance to the Wasmeer reserve, just off the N524 road, which is easily accessible from the A27 motorway.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route is predominantly flat, winding through a patchwork of ancient woodlands, open heath, and serene ponds. The estates of Bantam, Jagtlust, and Stofbergen are remnants of the 19th-century country retreats built by wealthy Amsterdam merchants, and their stately avenues and landscaped gardens still echo this genteel past. Hikers can use HiiKER for reliable navigation, as the trail occasionally branches off onto smaller, less-marked paths.
Highlights and Landmarks
- Bantam Estate (approx. 2 km/1.2 miles in): The trail enters Bantam’s lush beech and oak forests, where springtime carpets of wildflowers and the occasional roe deer are common sights. The estate’s old carriage paths and ornamental ponds are reminders of its aristocratic origins. - Jagtlust Estate (approx. 6 km/3.7 miles in): This section is characterized by stately tree-lined lanes and open meadows. The historic manor house, though not open to the public, can be glimpsed through the trees. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for woodpeckers and tawny owls. - Stofbergen Estate (approx. 10 km/6.2 miles in): The trail meanders through a quieter, more secluded woodland, where mossy trunks and ancient pines create a peaceful atmosphere. Small ponds attract frogs and dragonflies in summer.
Nature and Wildlife
Throughout the loop, the diversity of habitats supports a rich variety of wildlife. Expect to see squirrels, foxes, and a wide range of songbirds. The heathlands are especially vibrant in late summer when purple heather blooms. In wetter areas, look for herons and other waterfowl.
Historical Significance
These estates are part of the “s-Gravelandse Buitenplaatsen,” a collection of country houses and landscaped parks established in the 17th and 18th centuries by Amsterdam’s elite. The area’s history is reflected in the grand avenues, ornamental water features, and the careful blending of natural and designed landscapes.
Practical Tips
The trail is well-maintained and suitable for walking year-round, though waterproof footwear is recommended after rain, as some sections can become muddy. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, but no shops or cafes directly on the route, so bring water and snacks. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in nature reserves.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER before setting out, as mobile signal can be patchy in the denser woodlands. The loop brings you back to your starting point near the Wasmeer, making logistics simple whether you arrive by car or public transport.
