Loop
“Wander beneath ancient oaks and purple heather, where woodland whispers and cozy tea await your return.”
Nestled in the heart of Drenthe, the Theehuis and Anserdennen Loop offers a gentle 7 km (about 4.3 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible adventure for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the charming village of Dwingeloo, with the starting point close to the well-known Theehuis Anserdennen, a cozy tea house that serves as both a landmark and a welcoming spot to begin or end your walk.
Getting There Reaching the trailhead is straightforward. By public transport, take a train to Hoogeveen or Meppel, then transfer to a local bus heading toward Dwingeloo. From the Dwingeloo bus stop, it’s a short walk or cycle to the Theehuis Anserdennen. For those arriving by car, parking is available at or near the tea house, which is signposted from the main road through Dwingeloo.
Trail Experience and Navigation The loop meanders through the Anserdennen, a tranquil forested area within the Dwingelderveld National Park. The terrain is predominantly flat, with well-maintained sandy and forest paths. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and route tracking, HiiKER provides an accurate digital map of the loop.
Highlights Along the Route Woodland and Heathland The first section leads you beneath towering Scots pines and ancient oaks, with the forest floor carpeted in moss and heather. In late summer, the heathland bursts into a sea of purple, attracting butterflies and bees. Keep an eye out for the rare black woodpecker and the occasional roe deer darting through the undergrowth.
Cultural and Historical Points Midway through the loop, you’ll pass remnants of old sheepfolds, a nod to the region’s pastoral history. Drenthe is known for its prehistoric hunebedden (megalithic tombs), and while none are directly on this loop, the area’s ancient landscape is palpable. The Anserdennen forest itself was planted in the early 20th century as part of land reclamation efforts, and the tea house has long served as a gathering spot for locals and travelers alike.
Rest Stops and Facilities The Theehuis Anserdennen is a highlight in itself, offering refreshments and a peaceful garden to relax in before or after your hike. Benches are scattered along the route, perfect for a picnic or a quiet moment to listen to birdsong.
Nature and Wildlife The Dwingelderveld National Park is renowned for its biodiversity. Besides the heather and pine, you may spot buzzards circling overhead or hear the distinctive call of the nuthatch. The area is also home to grazing sheep and Highland cattle, which help maintain the open heathland.
Preparation Tips Given the flat terrain and short distance, this loop is suitable for families and those new to hiking. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some paths can become muddy. Bring water and snacks, though the tea house provides a convenient option for refreshments. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash due to grazing livestock and wildlife.
For a peaceful, scenic walk through one of Drenthe’s most beautiful natural areas, the Theehuis and Anserdennen Loop is a perfect choice, blending easy navigation, rich nature, and a touch of local history.
