Loop
“Wander beneath star-shaped avenues and ancient oaks, where history and woodland magic quietly intertwine.”
Starting from the outskirts of Roden, a charming village in the province of Drenthe, this 7 km (about 4.3 miles) loop trail offers a gentle walk through two of the region’s most enchanting forests: Sterrebos and Mensingebos. With virtually no elevation gain, this route is ideal for hikers of all abilities, families, and those seeking a peaceful immersion in Dutch woodland.
Getting There Roden is easily accessible by public transport. From Groningen, take a direct bus (such as Qbuzz line 4) to Roden’s central bus station. From there, it’s a short walk to the trailhead, which is conveniently located near the intersection of Norgerweg and Zwarteweg, close to the recognizable landmark of the Mensinge Estate. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Mensinge Estate (Havezate Mensinge), a well-known historic manor house that also serves as a museum and café.
Sterrebos: A Historic Woodland The first section of the loop leads you into Sterrebos, a forest planted in the 18th century as part of the Mensinge Estate’s landscaping. The name “Sterrebos” refers to the star-shaped pattern of its avenues, a classic feature of baroque garden design. As you walk beneath the tall, straight trunks, look for the geometric layout of the paths radiating from central points. This area is especially atmospheric in the early morning when sunlight filters through the canopy.
Mensingebos: Rich Biodiversity Transitioning into Mensingebos, the trail meanders through a more naturalistic woodland, where ancient oaks and beeches dominate. This forest is a haven for wildlife—roe deer are often spotted at dawn or dusk, and the undergrowth teems with songbirds, woodpeckers, and the occasional tawny owl. In spring, carpets of wildflowers and ferns line the path, while autumn brings a spectacular display of mushrooms and changing leaves.
Points of Interest and Navigation At approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles), you’ll pass close to the Mensinge Estate itself, a moated manor dating back to the 14th century. The estate grounds are open to visitors and feature a museum, gardens, and a café—an excellent spot for a mid-hike break. The trail continues along the Zwarte Weg (“Black Road”), a historic route once used for transporting peat and timber. Here, the landscape opens up briefly, offering views across meadows and traditional Drenthe farmland.
The loop is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress. The app provides detailed maps and waypoints, ensuring you stay on track through the forest’s network of intersecting paths.
Trail Conditions and Preparation Expect mostly flat, well-maintained dirt and gravel paths, suitable for walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots. The area can become muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months. There are benches and picnic spots scattered throughout both forests, making it easy to pause and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
Historical and Natural Significance The forests of Sterrebos and Mensingebos are part of the cultural landscape shaped by centuries of estate management and agriculture. The Mensinge Estate itself is a testament to the region’s feudal history, with its moated manor, ancient trees, and preserved parklands. The area is protected for its ecological value, supporting a diverse range of flora and fauna typical of Drenthe’s woodlands.
This loop offers a gentle, scenic walk through some of the Netherlands’ most storied and biodiverse forests, with easy access from Roden and plenty of opportunities to explore both natural and historical landmarks along the way.
