Loop
“Wander through sun-dappled woodlands and centuries-old avenues, where history and nature weave a tranquil tapestry.”
Nestled in the tranquil Drenthe countryside, this 10 km (6.2 mile) loop weaves through the lush forests of Mensingebos, Lieverderbosch, and Sterrebos, with virtually no elevation gain, making it an accessible and leisurely walk for all skill levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of Roden, with the nearest significant landmark being the historic Mensinge Estate, a centuries-old manor that marks the gateway to the forest.
Getting There Travelers arriving by public transport can take a train to Groningen, then transfer to a regional bus (such as Qbuzz line 4 or 86) toward Roden. Disembark at the Roden, Mensingebos stop, which is just a short walk from the trailhead. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Mensinge Estate (Havezate Mensinge, Mensingheweg 7, 9301 KA Roden), providing direct access to the forest paths.
Trail Experience and Navigation The loop is well-marked and follows wide, sandy forest tracks and narrower woodland paths, all of which are flat and easy underfoot. Hikers are encouraged to use HiiKER for up-to-date navigation and trail conditions, as the network of intersecting paths can be confusing, especially in the denser sections of Lieverderbosch.
Forests and Flora The route begins in Mensingebos, a mixed woodland of ancient oaks, beeches, and pines. In spring and early summer, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers and ferns, while autumn brings a spectacular display of golden foliage. The transition into Lieverderbosch is marked by a subtle change in vegetation, with more open glades and stands of birch and alder. Sterrebos, the final section, is known for its star-shaped avenues, a remnant of 18th-century landscape design.
Wildlife and Birdwatching These forests are a haven for wildlife. Roe deer are frequently spotted at dawn and dusk, and red squirrels dart through the canopy. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional tawny owl. The ponds and wetlands in Lieverderbosch attract frogs and dragonflies, and in quieter moments, you may hear the drumming of a black woodpecker echoing through the trees.
Historical Significance The area surrounding the Mensinge Estate has been inhabited since medieval times, and the estate itself dates back to the 15th century. The star-shaped avenues of Sterrebos were designed in the 1700s as part of a grand landscaping project, reflecting the influence of French formal gardens. Interpretive signs along the route provide insights into the history of the estate, the forestry traditions of Drenthe, and the unique landscape features shaped by centuries of human activity.
Facilities and Tips There are benches and picnic spots scattered throughout the loop, particularly near the estate and along the main avenues of Sterrebos. The paths are suitable for families and accessible for strollers, though after heavy rain, some sections may become muddy. Restrooms and a café can be found at the Mensinge Estate, making it a pleasant place to start or end your walk.
This loop offers a peaceful escape into nature, rich with history and biodiversity, and is easily accessible for a half-day adventure in the heart of Drenthe.
