Loop
“Stroll through vibrant dunes, tranquil lakes, and wildflower meadows, where history and nature intertwine.”
Starting from the edge of Oostvoorne, the trailhead for this 12 km (about 7.5 miles) loop is conveniently located near the visitor center at Tenellaplas, Duinen van Voorne, a well-known nature reserve in South Holland. The area is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the visitor center (Tenellaplas, Duinen van Voorne, Duinzoom 12, 3233 CW Oostvoorne). For those using public transport, buses from Rotterdam or Spijkenisse stop at Oostvoorne, from where it’s a short walk to the trailhead.
Trail Overview and Navigation
This loop is almost entirely flat, with negligible elevation gain, making it suitable for hikers of all abilities, including families and those looking for a relaxed day out. The route follows the Van Burenpad and winds through a mosaic of coastal dunes, freshwater lakes, and open meadows. Navigation is straightforward, but for added confidence and up-to-date trail conditions, HiiKER is recommended as your primary navigation tool.
Natural Highlights and Wildlife
The Tenellaplas and Voornes Duin area is renowned for its biodiversity. Early in the hike, you’ll skirt the Tenellaplas lake, a haven for waterfowl such as grebes, herons, and sometimes even kingfishers. The surrounding reed beds and willow thickets are alive with bird song, especially in spring and early summer.
As you progress, the trail enters the Voornes Duin, one of the richest dune landscapes in Western Europe. Here, you’ll encounter a mix of dry dunes, wet slacks, and ancient woodlands. Look out for grazing Highland cattle and Konik horses, which help maintain the open character of the dunes. In summer, the meadows burst with wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
At roughly 4 km (2.5 miles), you’ll pass the Vogelobservatiehut (bird hide), an excellent spot to pause and observe the abundant birdlife. The trail also passes remnants of WWII bunkers, a reminder of the region’s strategic importance during the war. These bunkers are scattered throughout the dunes and can be explored from the outside.
Midway through the loop, the path approaches the North Sea coast, where you can detour to the wide, sandy beach for a break or a swim. The dunes here offer panoramic views over the sea and the surrounding nature reserve.
Historical and Cultural Context
The Voornes Duin area has a rich history, shaped by centuries of human interaction with the land and sea. The dunes themselves were formed over thousands of years by wind and water, and the area has been used for grazing, water collection, and military defense. The WWII bunkers are a testament to the region’s role in the Atlantic Wall, a coastal defense line built by Nazi Germany.
Practical Information
The loop is well-marked and maintained, with several benches and picnic spots along the way. There are no significant climbs, and the sandy paths are generally easy underfoot, though after heavy rain, some sections can be muddy. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife.
Refreshments and toilets are available at the visitor center at the start and end of the hike. For those interested in extending their visit, the nearby town of Oostvoorne offers cafes, shops, and additional walking routes.
For the best experience, bring binoculars for birdwatching, and check HiiKER for the latest trail updates and route maps.
