Loop
“Wander through whispering willows and vibrant wetlands, where history and nature dance beside gentle waters.”
Embarking on the Kasteel, Klein Profijt, and Rhoorse Grienden Loop offers a serene 16-kilometer (approximately 10-mile) journey through the lush landscapes of South Holland, Netherlands. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy trail is ideal for hikers of all levels.
Trailhead and Access
The trail begins near the village of Rhoon, accessible by both car and public transport. For those driving, parking is available at the end of Schenkeldijk in Rhoon. If you're using public transportation, take the metro to Rhoon Station; from there, it's a short walk or bus ride to the trailhead.
Trail Overview
Starting from the parking area, the path leads you into the Rhoonse Grienden, a unique nature reserve along the Oude Maas River. This area is characterized by its marshes and willow forests, known as grienden, which are traditional Dutch wetlands where willow trees are cultivated. The trail meanders through these wetlands, offering a peaceful environment rich in biodiversity.
Klein Profijt
Approximately halfway through the loop, you'll enter Klein Profijt, a freshwater tidal area adjacent to the Rhoonse Grienden. This section features a mix of pollard willows, narrow trails, and waterways. The name "Klein Profijt," meaning "small profit," harks back to the area's history of low-yield salmon fishing. Be prepared for potentially muddy and overgrown paths, especially during high tide or after rainfall. It's advisable to check tide tables before your hike to ensure optimal trail conditions.
Flora and Fauna
The trail is a haven for nature enthusiasts. In spring, the area blooms with rare flowers, and throughout the year, it's home to various bird species, including kingfishers, spotted flycatchers, and common redstarts. The wetlands also attract waders during migration seasons. Keep an eye out for beavers and other wildlife that inhabit the region.
Historical Significance
The Rhoonse Grienden and Klein Profijt are remnants of traditional Dutch grienden, where willow cultivation has been practiced for centuries. These areas have been managed to preserve their cultural and ecological value, offering a glimpse into the Netherlands' historical relationship with its waterways and wetlands.
Trail Conditions and Recommendations
Given the trail's low elevation and proximity to tidal waters, certain sections can become muddy or even submerged during high tide. It's essential to wear sturdy, waterproof footwear and to check tide schedules before setting out. The trail is well-marked, but carrying a navigation tool like HiiKER can enhance your hiking experience. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.
