Loop
“A gentle loop of terraces, hushed woods, and arrow-straight plantation lanes under wide Heuvelrug skies.”
This easy, rolling loop links three very different faces of the southern Utrechtse Heuvelrug: the terraced open slopes of Kwintelooyen, the quieter woodland of Remmersteinsche Bosch, and the long, straight “plantation” lines of Plantage Willem III. At around 21 km / 13.0 mi with roughly 100 m / 330 ft of total ascent, it’s more about steady forward movement and changing scenery than any single big climb.
The most practical start landmark is Parkeerplaats Kwintelooyen (Oude Veensegrindweg 39, 3911 TA Rhenen, Netherlands), close to House of Bird Kwintelooijen (Oude Veensegrindweg 47)—a useful reference point for meeting up, restrooms/food (when open), and orienting before you set off. Bring HiiKER for turn-by-turn confidence at junction-dense sections (especially where sandy tracks braid together in Kwintelooyen and where plantation lanes intersect at right angles in Plantage Willem III).
---
You’ll typically begin on broad, well-used paths that quickly open into Kwintelooyen’s distinctive stepped terrain. These terraces are the legacy of sand extraction, which left a “cut-away” hillside and a series of benches that now function like natural balconies. The first 2–4 km / 1.2–2.5 mi are a great warm-up: mostly level-to-gently rising, with frequent chances to drift onto side viewpoints without adding meaningful elevation.
As you traverse the open slopes, expect big skies and long sightlines over the surrounding lowlands—this is one of the most panoramic corners of the Heuvelrug. Underfoot, surfaces often alternate between compacted sand, fine gravel, and short heathland turf. In dry spells, the sand can feel a little “soft,” slowing pace slightly; after rain, a few low spots can hold water and become slick.
Wildlife here is often most visible at the edges: listen for woodland birds calling from the treeline and scan the open ground for movement. The broader region is known for a mix of forest and heath habitats that support a wide variety of birds and mammals. This is the section where navigation can feel least obvious because multiple forestry tracks can look similar. Use HiiKER at intersections and keep an eye on your intended bearing; it’s easy to follow a tempting straight track that gradually pulls you off the loop.
