Nestled in the lush Veluwezoom National Park, this 10 km (6.2 miles) loop hike with about 100 metres (328 feet) of elevation gain begins near the well-known Bezoekerscentrum Veluwezoom, just outside Rheden. The trailhead is easily accessible by public transport: take the train to Rheden station, then walk or catch a local bus to the visitor centre. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the visitor centre, which is signposted from the main roads leading into Rheden.
Trail Overview and Navigation
The route winds through a mosaic of ancient woodland, open heath, and tranquil ponds, making it a gentle but rewarding walk suitable for most fitness levels. The path is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress.
Key Sections and Landmarks
*Vijver Beekhuizen and Surroundings* Within the first kilometre, you’ll reach Vijver Beekhuizen, a serene pond surrounded by mature beech and oak trees. This area was once part of a 19th-century landscaped park, and remnants of ornamental bridges and water features can still be spotted. The pond is a haven for waterfowl, including herons and kingfishers, and the early morning mist often creates a magical atmosphere.
*Ossenberg and Dassenberg Ridges* As you continue, the trail gently ascends the Ossenberg and Dassenberg ridges. These low hills, rising about 50 metres (164 feet) above the surrounding landscape, offer sweeping views across the Veluwezoom’s rolling heathlands. In late summer, the heather blooms in vibrant purple, attracting butterflies and bees. Keep an eye out for roe deer grazing at the forest edge and listen for the drumming of woodpeckers in the trees.
*Historic Estates and Forests* Midway through the hike, you’ll pass near the historic Beekhuizen estate, once a grand country retreat. While the main house no longer stands, the landscaped grounds and old carriage paths remain, lined with towering chestnut and linden trees. Interpretive signs along the route provide insight into the area’s history as a fashionable escape for Arnhem’s elite in the 1800s.
Wildlife and Seasonal Highlights
The Veluwezoom is renowned for its biodiversity. Wild boar, foxes, and badgers inhabit the dense undergrowth, though they are shy and rarely seen during the day. Birdlife is abundant year-round, with nuthatches, jays, and tawny owls among the regulars. In spring, carpets of wildflowers and the fresh green of new leaves transform the forest, while autumn brings a spectacular display of golden foliage and mushrooms.
Trail Conditions and Preparation
Paths are mostly wide and well-maintained, with a mix of gravel, packed earth, and occasional sandy stretches. After heavy rain, some sections can become muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the pond and at scenic viewpoints atop the ridges.
Getting There and Facilities
The Bezoekerscentrum Veluwezoom serves as a convenient starting point, offering maps, restrooms, and a café for pre- or post-hike refreshments. Public transport users can reach Rheden station from Arnhem in under 15 minutes, with the visitor centre a short walk or bus ride away. For drivers, the visitor centre’s car park is the best option, with clear signage from the N348 road.
