Point-to-Point
“Wander through rolling purple heaths, tranquil ponds, and ancient forests, ending at a fairytale castle.”
Starting from the scenic Posbank area, this 9 km (about 5.6 miles) route with a gentle elevation gain of approximately 100 metres (328 feet) offers a classic introduction to the Veluwezoom National Park’s rolling heathlands and woodlands. The trailhead is easily accessible: if arriving by public transport, take the train to Rheden station, then catch a local bus or walk about 2 km (1.2 miles) to the Posbank Pavilion, a well-known visitor center and café. For those driving, parking is available at the Posbank Pavilion (Beekhuizenseweg 1, 6991 JM Rheden).
Heathlands and Panoramic Views
The first stretch leads you through the iconic purple heath of the Posbank, especially vibrant in late summer. The open landscape is dotted with juniper bushes and solitary birch trees, and on clear days, you can see as far as Arnhem. The area is home to grazing sheep and wild ponies, which help maintain the heath’s unique ecosystem. Keep an eye out for buzzards and kestrels circling overhead.
Vijver Beekhuizen and Forested Valleys
After about 3 km (1.9 miles), the trail descends gently into the Beekhuizen valley, where you’ll find Vijver Beekhuizen, a tranquil pond surrounded by mature beech and oak trees. This spot is a haven for waterfowl and amphibians, and the shaded paths here are especially welcome on warm days. The Beekhuizen estate, once a grand 18th-century country retreat, is now a peaceful woodland, but remnants of its landscaped gardens and old bridges remain.
Herikhuizerweg and Rozendaal Castle
Continuing along Herikhuizerweg, the path climbs gradually through mixed forest, gaining most of the route’s 100 metres (328 feet) of elevation. This section is known for its ancient beech avenues and occasional sightings of red deer or wild boar, particularly at dawn or dusk. After about 7 km (4.3 miles), the forest opens up as you approach the outskirts of Rozendaal.
The hike concludes near the historic Rozendaal Castle (Kastanjelaan 1, 6891 CM Rozendaal), famous for its water features and landscaped gardens. The castle dates back to the 14th century and is one of the best-preserved moated castles in the Netherlands. If time allows, a visit to the castle gardens is highly recommended, especially for their playful “bedriegertjes” (trick fountains).
Navigation and Preparation
The route is well-marked, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is advised for real-time navigation and to explore optional detours. The terrain is mostly easy, with wide sandy paths and occasional short, steeper sections. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially after rain when some paths can be muddy. Water and snacks are essential, as there are limited facilities between Posbank and Rozendaal.
Public transport from Rozendaal back to Arnhem or Rheden is straightforward, with regular buses departing from the village center, a short walk from the castle. This hike offers a blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and Dutch history, making it a rewarding day out for walkers of all abilities.
