Point-to-Point
“Drift from Posbank’s big-sky heather to the hushed Onzalige Bossen on gentle, sandy trails.”
This is a short, low-effort loop/there-and-back style walk across the Posbank heath and into the Onzalige Bossen (“Unlucky/Ill‑fated Woods”) area, with a very gentle profile—about 9 km / 5.6 mi and effectively ~0 m / ~0 ft of sustained climbing (you may still feel small, rolling undulations typical of the Veluwezoom moraine landscape, but nothing that hikes like “elevation gain”).
- By car: Aim for Rheden / Velp and follow signs for Nationaal Park Veluwezoom and Posbank. Parking is typically at or near the Posbank viewpoint area; on busy weekends and during heather bloom, access roads and parking can be restricted or fill early. - By public transport: The most practical approach is usually train to Rheden or Velp (both have rail stations), then a bus/taxi/bike toward the Veluwezoom entrances. From the village edge you’ll be climbing gently onto the heathland plateau to reach the Posbank area. If you’re planning to rely entirely on transit, check the day’s bus frequency and last return options before you commit, because service can be limited outside peak times.
If you share the lon/lat you have for the “Hike head,” I can pin it to the nearest named place (car park, trail gate, pavilion, or junction) and describe the first turns more precisely.
Navigation is straightforward in clear weather, but the heath can look deceptively open and “path-similar,” especially where multiple informal tracks braid together. If you use a digital tool, keep it to HiiKER and download the route for offline use—mobile signal can be patchy in the woods.
Landmarks and scenery to watch for: - Heather fields (Calluna vulgaris): late summer (often August into early September) can turn the heath purple and draws crowds. - Solitary pines and birch edges: classic heath/wood ecotone—great for birdlife. - Viewpoints and benches: the Posbank is known for short, scenic pauses; it’s easy to add time here without adding distance.
Wildlife: This is one of the best areas in the Netherlands for large mammals. You may spot red deer at the woodland margins, especially early/late in the day. Wild boar also live in the park but are less predictably seen; give them space and never approach. On the heath, look for buzzards, ravens, and smaller heathland birds; in warmer months, adders (vipers) can occur in heath habitats—rarely encountered, but it’s a good reason to watch where you place hands/feet if you step off-trail for a photo.
Underfoot, the forest sections often include sandy lanes and needle-strewn paths. These are easy-going but can be slippery with a thin layer of wet leaves in autumn. Because the terrain is flatter here, the “effort” is mostly about steady walking rather than climbing.
What to look out for: - Forest edge transitions: where heath meets woodland you often get the best wildlife movement corridors. - Mossy banks and fungi: autumn can be excellent for mushrooms—admire, don’t pick, and be mindful that some species are toxic. - Quiet junction density: the woods can have many intersecting tracks; this is where checking HiiKER at junctions prevents small wrong turns that add distance.
