Loop
“Wander through a tapestry of Dutch polders, windmills, and wildlife, where history and nature entwine.”
Starting from the edge of Surfplas, near the recreational area just outside Gouda, this 13 km (about 8 miles) loop trail offers a flat, easy walk with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Surfplas parking area, which is easily reached by car from Gouda’s city center in under 10 minutes. For those using public transport, take a train to Gouda station and then a local bus or bike rental to the Surfplas recreational area.
Route Overview and Navigation
The loop winds through a patchwork of Dutch polder landscapes, passing through the tranquil hamlets of ’s-Gravenkoop, Groot Vogelenzang, and Klein Vogelenzang. The entire route is well-marked, but for added confidence and real-time navigation, use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed mapping and trail updates.
Landmarks and Points of Interest
Shortly after leaving Surfplas, you’ll skirt the edge of the lake, a popular spot for birdwatching—look for great crested grebes, herons, and sometimes even kingfishers. At around 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail enters the rural expanse of ’s-Gravenkoop, a tiny settlement with traditional Dutch farmhouses and wide, open fields. This area is a classic example of reclaimed land, or “polder,” showcasing the Netherlands’ centuries-old battle with water management.
Continuing toward Groot Vogelenzang at the 6 km (3.7 miles) mark, you’ll notice the landscape shift subtly, with more wooded areas and small canals crisscrossing the fields. Groot Vogelenzang is known for its historic farms and the remnants of old windmills, some dating back to the 18th century. These windmills played a crucial role in draining the land and maintaining the delicate balance between water and earth.
Klein Vogelenzang, reached at about 9 km (5.6 miles), is even quieter, with narrow lanes lined by willows and poplars. This section is especially peaceful, offering a chance to spot hares, pheasants, and a variety of waterfowl in the ditches and ponds.
Nature and Wildlife
Throughout the loop, the flat, open terrain is ideal for spotting wildlife. Spring and summer bring a burst of wildflowers along the dikes, while autumn offers golden reed beds and migrating birds. The area is also home to roe deer, foxes, and a rich variety of insects and butterflies.
Historical Significance
The region’s history is deeply tied to Dutch water engineering. The polder system here dates back to the Middle Ages, with dikes, sluices, and windmills forming a living museum of Dutch ingenuity. Many of the farms and hamlets you pass have roots stretching back several centuries, and the landscape itself tells the story of land reclaimed from marsh and lake.
Getting There and Practical Tips
By car, set your navigation to Surfplas Gouda, located at Surfpad, 2806 Gouda. Ample parking is available at the recreation area. For public transport, take the train to Gouda station, then bus 3 or 4 toward Goverwelle, alighting at the Surfpad stop, or rent a bike for a scenic 15-minute ride from the station.
The trail is mostly on well-maintained paths and quiet country roads, suitable for walking year-round. Bring water and snacks, as there are limited facilities along the route. Waterproof footwear is recommended in wetter months, as some sections can be muddy. Always check the latest route updates and trail conditions on HiiKER before setting out.
