Putten to Elspeet via Oud Groevenbeek, Ermelosche Heide and Elspeetsche Heide

This is a long, mostly level day-walk across the Veluwe’s mosaic of heathland, pine and mixed woodland, and sandy tracks—linking Putten to Elspeet via the Oud Groevenbeek estate area, the Ermelosche Heide, and the Elspeetsche Heide. At around 31 km / 19.3 mi with roughly 0 m / 0 ft of climbing, the effort comes less from hills and more from time on feet, surface changes (sand vs. firm paths), and exposure on open heaths.

Start location (nearest known place) - The practical “hike head” for Putten is typically around Putten railway station (Station Putten), 3881 Putten, Netherlands, which is a clear, well-known landmark and easy to reach by transit and car. If your exact start point is slightly different, use HiiKER to confirm the first waypoint and align it with the nearest access point/parking area.

Getting to the start (Putten)

By public transport - Train: Putten has an NS station on the Amersfoort–Zwolle corridor. From major hubs like Amersfoort or Zwolle, you can connect easily and start walking straight from the station area. - Bus: Local buses serve Putten’s center and surrounding villages; schedules vary by day/time, so check the current operator timetable before you go.

By car - Putten is accessible via regional roads connecting to the A28 corridor. For a straightforward start, aim for parking near Station Putten or a central public car park in Putten, then follow your HiiKER route to the first trail segment.

What the route feels like underfoot

Expect a mix of: - Wide forest tracks (often compacted and fast) - Heathland paths (can be narrower, sometimes sandy) - Sandy stretches on and near the heaths (slower, more tiring late in the day) - Occasional cycle-path crossings and shared-use tracks—stay alert for fast bikes, especially on straight forest lanes.

Because the elevation gain is negligible, pacing is about maintaining a steady rhythm and managing foot comfort. If you’re used to hillier hikes, the surprise here is how sand and distance can quietly add fatigue.

Putten to Oud Groevenbeek (approx. 8–11 km / 5–6.8 mi)

Leaving Putten, the landscape quickly transitions from village edges into the Veluwe’s wooded character. You’ll likely pass through managed forest blocks—pine stands interspersed with mixed woodland—where the ground is often needle-covered and springy.

The Oud Groevenbeek area is associated with historic estate landscapes typical of this part of Gelderland: long, straight lanes, older woodland parcels, and a “designed” feel to the forest structure. Even when you’re not looking at a grand building, the geometry of the tracks and the mature tree lines hint at land use shaped over centuries.

What to look for: - Straight beech or oak-lined lanes and older boundary features - Woodpeckers (great spotted is common) and songbirds in mixed stands - In quieter stretches, signs of wild boar rooting (disturbed soil, turned leaf litter)

Across Ermelosche Heide (approx. 11–22 km / 6.8–13.7 mi)

This is where the day opens up. Heathland on the Veluwe is a culturally shaped landscape—maintained historically through grazing and management to prevent full reforestation. The result is a broad, open habitat that feels very different from the surrounding woods.

Underfoot and conditions: - Paths can be sandy and braided in places; choose the firmest line to save energy. - Wind exposure is higher here; in cooler months it can feel noticeably colder than in the forest. - In late summer, heather bloom can be striking, and the open views make this section feel expansive despite the flat profile.

Wildlife and nature notes: - Heathland supports insects (including dragonflies near wetter pockets) and ground-nesting birds; keep to established paths. - You may see red deer or roe deer at the edges of the heath, especially early/late in the day. - Adders are present in Dutch heath habitats; they’re shy and avoid people, but watch where you place hands/feet if you step off-trail for a break.

Navigation: - Heaths can be deceptively disorienting because landmarks are subtle and junctions can look similar. Keep HiiKER handy and confirm direction at each major fork rather than “correcting later.”

Elspeetsche Heide to Elspeet (approx. 22–31 km / 13.7–19.3 mi)

The Elspeetsche Heide continues the heath-and-forest rhythm, often with a slightly more intimate feel as woodland edges and sheltering tree lines reappear. This late section is where foot care matters most: sand plus distance can create hot spots even on an “easy” profile.

What to expect: - Alternating open heath and forest corridors - More frequent signs of nearby settlement as you approach Elspeet - Potentially busier shared tracks closer to access points and parking areas

Landmarks and regional context: - The Veluwe region has long been shaped by a mix of forestry, grazing, and estate management, and later by conservation priorities that protect heathland as a valued habitat. The patchwork you walk through reflects that layered history: “wild” feeling spaces that are also
