Loop
“From castle reflections to ancient woods and wildflower meadows, this loop brims with seasonal color and quiet charm.”
Starting from the vicinity of Kasteel Ravenhof, a stately castle near the Belgian-Dutch border in Putte, this loop trail covers approximately 20 km (12.4 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is easily reached by car, with parking available at the castle grounds. For those using public transport, buses from Antwerp or Essen stop in Putte, a short walk from the castle.
Exploring Moretusbos and Stoppelbergen
The route weaves through the Moretusbos, a lush, ancient woodland named after the Moretus family, who once owned the estate. Towering oaks, beeches, and chestnuts line the wide, sandy paths, offering shade and a sense of tranquility. The forest is home to roe deer, foxes, and a variety of woodland birds, including woodpeckers and nuthatches. In spring and early summer, the forest floor bursts with wildflowers and ferns.
After about 6 km (3.7 miles), the trail transitions into the Stoppelbergen, a gently undulating heathland dotted with pine groves and open meadows. This area is known for its sandy soils and unique flora, including heather and gorse. Keep an eye out for butterflies and dragonflies flitting among the wildflowers, especially in late summer.
Kasteel Ravenhof and Historical Highlights
At roughly the halfway point, the loop brings you back to Kasteel Ravenhof, a striking 18th-century castle surrounded by manicured gardens and a reflective pond. The castle grounds are open to visitors, and the adjacent brasserie offers a pleasant spot for refreshments. The estate has a rich history, having served as a noble residence and later as a cultural center.
Navigation and Trail Conditions
The entire loop is well-marked, with clear signage at major junctions. Paths are mostly wide and flat, composed of packed sand or gravel, making them suitable for families and those seeking a leisurely walk. After rain, some sections may become muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended. For navigation, HiiKER provides detailed maps and GPS tracks to ensure you stay on course.
Wildlife and Seasonal Changes
Throughout the year, the landscape changes dramatically. In autumn, the Moretusbos is ablaze with color as the leaves turn, while winter brings a quiet stillness, with frost dusting the meadows. Birdwatchers will find plenty to observe, from migratory songbirds in spring to resident raptors hunting over the open fields.
