Loop
“Wander beneath whispering pines and blooming heaths, where woodland wonders and cultural gems await discovery.”
Nestled in the heart of Overijssel, the Boswachterij Staphorst Loop offers a gentle 15 km (about 9.3 miles) circuit through one of the Netherlands’ most tranquil forest reserves. With virtually no elevation gain, this easy-rated trail is perfect for hikers of all abilities, including families and those seeking a leisurely day outdoors. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Boswachterij Staphorst visitor center, just off the Vijverweg, a short drive from the village of Staphorst.
Getting There Travelers arriving by public transport can take a train to Meppel station, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 40 or 641) toward Staphorst. Disembark at the “Staphorst, Gemeentehuis” stop, from which it’s a pleasant 2 km (1.2 miles) walk or short taxi ride to the visitor center. For those driving, parking is available at the Boswachterij Staphorst visitor center on Vijverweg, with clear signage from the main road.
Trail Experience
Woodlands and Heaths The loop winds through a patchwork of dense pine and deciduous forests, interspersed with open heathland and tranquil ponds. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through stands of Scots pine and oak, where the forest floor is carpeted with moss and ferns. In spring and summer, the heaths burst into color with blooming heather and wildflowers, attracting butterflies and bees.
Wildlife and Birdwatching Keep an eye out for roe deer, foxes, and the occasional badger, especially in the quieter stretches. Birdlife is abundant—listen for woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the melodic song of the nightingale. The ponds and wetlands are home to frogs and dragonflies, and you may spot herons or even a kingfisher darting across the water.
Cultural and Historical Highlights Midway through the loop, the trail skirts the edge of traditional Staphorst farmland, where you’ll see the region’s iconic blue-and-green painted farmhouses. These farms are a testament to the area’s unique cultural heritage, shaped by centuries of peat cutting and land reclamation. Informational panels along the route provide insights into the history of the Staphorst community and its distinctive customs, including the famous Staphorster stipwerk (dot painting).
Navigation and Facilities The route is well-marked with colored posts, but for added confidence, download the trail map from HiiKER. Benches and picnic spots are scattered throughout, and there are restrooms at the visitor center. The terrain is mostly flat and sandy, with occasional muddy patches after rain—waterproof footwear is recommended in wet weather.
Seasonal Tips The forest is especially beautiful in autumn, when the leaves turn golden and the air is crisp. In winter, the trail remains accessible, though some sections may be slippery. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife.
With its easy access, gentle terrain, and rich natural and cultural tapestry, this loop is an inviting escape for anyone looking to experience the quiet beauty of the Dutch countryside.
