Trail Overview
The hike meanders through the Rhoonse and Carnisse Grienden, unique freshwater tidal wetlands characterized by their willow forests and rich biodiversity. The terrain consists of well-maintained dirt and gravel paths, with occasional boardwalks over wetter sections. Given the flat nature of the trail, it's suitable for hikers of all abilities.
Key Highlights
- Rhoonse Grienden: Starting from the trailhead, you'll enter the Rhoonse Grienden, a vast area of willow forests that are periodically flooded by the tides of the Oude Maas. This ecosystem supports a variety of birdlife, including herons and kingfishers.
- Klein Profijt: Approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Klein Profijt, a section of the grienden that has evolved into a dense willow jungle. This area is a haven for beavers and a variety of bird species.
- Carnisse Grienden: Around the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) mark, the trail leads into the Carnisse Grienden. This area features a network of boardwalks and offers views of the tidal wetlands and the Oude Maas River.
- Oude Maas Riverbank: The trail skirts the river, providing wide views across the water and a chance to spot passing ships. Benches along the bank make for pleasant rest stops.
Flora and Fauna
The grienden are renowned for their willow forests, which are periodically flooded by the tides of the Oude Maas. This rare ecosystem supports a variety of birdlife, including herons, kingfishers, and sometimes even cormorants. In spring and early summer, the area bursts with wildflowers and the buzzing of insects, while autumn brings a golden hue to the willows. Keep an eye out for roe deer and rabbits, especially in the quieter stretches.
Historical Significance
The Rhoonse and Carnisse Grienden are living testaments to Dutch water management. For centuries, local farmers harvested willow branches here for use in dike reinforcement and basket weaving. The area’s network of dikes and sluices reflects the ongoing battle against the tides, a theme central to the history of South Holland.
