Loop
“Wander through wildflower meadows, tranquil waterways, and timeless Dutch landscapes on this serene countryside loop.”
Starting from the outskirts of Berkel en Rodenrijs, a small town just north of Rotterdam, the De Groenzoom and Nieuwe Droogmaking Loop offers a flat, easy-going circuit of approximately 23 km (about 14.3 miles) with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all fitness levels. The trailhead is conveniently located near the Berkel Westpolder metro station, which is easily reached from Rotterdam Centraal by Metro Line E in under 30 minutes. For those arriving by car, parking is available at the Berkel Westpolder Parkeerplaats, adjacent to the station.
Navigating the Route
The loop is best navigated using the HiiKER app, which provides reliable GPS guidance and up-to-date trail information. The route meanders through the heart of De Groenzoom, a recently developed green corridor designed to connect the urban edges of Rotterdam, Pijnacker, and Zoetermeer with a mosaic of wetlands, meadows, and waterways. Expect well-maintained gravel and paved paths, suitable for both walking and cycling, with clear signposting at major junctions.
Landscapes and Nature Highlights
De Groenzoom is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Early in the hike, you’ll pass through open polder landscapes, where expansive skies and grazing sheep set a tranquil scene. In spring and summer, the meadows are alive with wildflowers and butterflies, while the waterways attract herons, grebes, and the occasional kingfisher. Around the 7 km (4.3 mile) mark, the trail skirts several reed-fringed ponds—ideal spots to pause and scan for waterfowl.
Continuing north, the route enters the Nieuwe Droogmaking, a historic polder reclaimed from marshland in the 19th century. Here, you’ll notice the classic Dutch landscape of straight canals, windbreaks of poplar trees, and traditional farmhouses. The land’s history as a droogmakerij (drained land) is evident in the network of ditches and pumping stations, some of which date back over a century.
Points of Interest and Facilities
At roughly 12 km (7.5 miles), the trail passes close to the village of Pijnacker, where you’ll find cafes, bakeries, and supermarkets—perfect for a mid-hike break. Public toilets are available at the Pijnacker Centrum and at several recreation areas along the route. Picnic tables and benches are scattered throughout De Groenzoom, especially near the children’s play areas and birdwatching hides.
Wildlife and Seasonal Considerations
The wetlands are home to a variety of wildlife, including hares, foxes, and a rich diversity of birds. In winter, the area can be popular with migratory geese and ducks, while in summer, dragonflies and frogs abound. The flat terrain means the trail is rarely muddy, but after heavy rain, some sections near the water may become slippery.
Getting There and Back
Public transport is the most convenient option, with frequent metro and bus connections from Rotterdam, The Hague, and Zoetermeer to Berkel Westpolder. Cyclists can also reach the trailhead via the extensive Dutch bike network. For drivers, the Berkel Westpolder Parkeerplaats offers free parking, and the area is well-signposted from the N470 ring road.
This loop is ideal for those seeking a peaceful, scenic walk through the Dutch countryside, with easy logistics and plenty of opportunities to enjoy local wildlife and rural heritage.
