Loop
“Wander through sunlit dunes and whispering pines, where wildflowers, wildlife, and history quietly unfold.”
Starting from the edge of Petten, a small coastal village in North Holland, the Pettemerduinen and Korfwater Loop offers a gentle 6 km (about 3.7 miles) circuit with virtually no elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of all abilities. The trailhead is conveniently located near the intersection of Pettemerweg and Hondsbosscheweg, just a short walk from the village center and the North Sea dunes.
Getting There Petten is easily reached by public transport: take a train to Alkmaar, then transfer to a local bus (such as line 151) that stops in Petten. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the beach entrance at Pettemerweg, close to the start of the loop.
Dune Landscapes and Coastal Forests The route winds through the Pettemerduinen, a protected dune reserve characterized by rolling sand dunes, open grasslands, and patches of coastal pine forest. Early in the hike, you’ll notice the shifting landscape—one moment you’re walking through open, sandy stretches with views of the North Sea, and the next you’re shaded by dense stands of pine and birch. The dunes here are part of the larger Noordhollands Duinreservaat, a vital natural barrier that has protected the hinterland from the sea for centuries.
Wildlife and Flora Keep an eye out for grazing Highland cattle and Konik horses, which help maintain the open character of the dunes. Birdlife is abundant, especially during spring and autumn migrations, with skylarks, kestrels, and sometimes even owls making appearances. In summer, the dunes are dotted with wildflowers like sea holly and orchids, while autumn brings a flush of mushrooms and berries.
Korfwater Wetlands Midway through the loop, the trail skirts the Korfwater, a unique wetland area nestled between the dunes. This freshwater habitat is a haven for amphibians and waterfowl, including herons and grebes. Wooden boardwalks and observation points allow for close-up views without disturbing the delicate ecosystem.
Historical Significance The region’s history is deeply tied to the ongoing battle against the sea. The nearby Hondsbossche Zeewering, a massive sea dike, is a testament to Dutch ingenuity in water management. Remnants of WWII bunkers can be found hidden among the dunes, silent reminders of the area’s strategic importance during the war.
Navigation and Trail Conditions The loop is well-marked with posts and signs, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any seasonal changes or detours. The sandy paths can be soft in places, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended, but the terrain is otherwise flat and easy to navigate.
Facilities and Tips There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the Korfwater. Public toilets and a beach café can be found at the main beach entrance in Petten, making it easy to combine your hike with a visit to the sea. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash in certain areas to protect wildlife.
This loop is ideal for a relaxed half-day outing, offering a blend of coastal scenery, rich biodiversity, and glimpses into the Netherlands’ ongoing relationship with the sea.
