Point-to-Point
“Meandering through rewilded riverbanks and historic villages, this trail blends nature’s peace with echoes of the past.”
Starting near the village of Pannerden, this 18 km (about 11.2 miles) route follows the Goudsbloem Pad Zuid and The Forgotten Trail, traversing the flat, open landscapes of Gelderland with virtually no elevation gain. The trailhead is easily accessible by public transport, with regular buses from Arnhem or Nijmegen stopping at Pannerden Dorp, just a short walk from the start. For those arriving by car, parking is available near the village center, close to the historic St. Martinuskerk.
Navigating the Riverlands and Dykes
The first section leads you along the banks of the Oude Rijn and the Waal, where the landscape is defined by wide river views, grassy dykes, and the occasional willow grove. The area is part of the Gelderse Poort nature reserve, a rewilded floodplain where you may spot Konik horses, Galloway cattle, and a variety of waterfowl, especially in spring and autumn. The trail is well-marked, but for added confidence, use HiiKER to follow the route and check for any seasonal detours due to high water.
Historic Villages and WWII Remnants
After about 6 km (3.7 miles), you’ll pass through the hamlet of Aerdt, notable for its traditional brick farmhouses and the 19th-century St. Martinus Church. This region was a strategic crossing point during World War II, and you may notice remnants of old bunkers and pillboxes hidden in the undergrowth. Interpretive signs along the way provide context about Operation Market Garden and the area's role in the liberation of the Netherlands.
Crossing the Linge and Entering Elst
Continuing south, the trail meanders through orchards and meadows, especially vibrant in late April when the fruit trees bloom. At around 13 km (8 miles), you’ll cross the Linge River, the longest river entirely within the Netherlands, via a small pedestrian bridge. The final stretch leads you into Elst, a town known for its Roman history—archaeological excavations here have uncovered the remains of two Roman temples beneath the current St. Werenfridus Church.
Practical Considerations
The entire route is flat, making it suitable for all fitness levels and ideal for a relaxed day hike. Surfaces are a mix of paved paths, gravel tracks, and grassy dykes, so waterproof footwear is recommended, especially after rain. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, particularly near the riverbanks and in the village centers. Public toilets and cafes can be found in Pannerden, Aerdt, and Elst.
For navigation, download the route on HiiKER before setting out, as mobile signal can be patchy in the more remote stretches. The trail is accessible year-round, but spring and early autumn offer the best combination of mild weather and abundant wildlife.
