Loop
“Wander through sunlit dunes, shimmering lakes, and wildflower meadows for a refreshing taste of Dutch coastal beauty.”
Starting from the edge of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, just northwest of Haarlem and close to the entrance at Zeeweg 12, Overveen, this 11 km (about 6.8 miles) loop offers a gentle, flat walk with virtually no elevation gain—perfect for those seeking an easy day out immersed in Dutch coastal nature. The trail is well-marked and accessible, making it suitable for families, casual walkers, and anyone looking to explore the unique landscapes of North Holland.
Getting There
Reaching the trailhead is straightforward. If arriving by public transport, take the train to Haarlem or Overveen station. From Haarlem station, bus 81 runs frequently and stops at the “Zeeweg, Overveen” stop, just a short walk from the park entrance. For those driving, parking is available at the main entrance on Zeeweg, though it can fill up quickly on weekends and sunny days.
Trail Experience and Navigation
The route forms a scenic loop, weaving through a mosaic of dune landscapes, tranquil lakes, and open woodland. Navigation is simple, with clear signage throughout the park, but for added confidence and real-time tracking, use HiiKER to follow the route and check your progress.
Highlights Along the Route
*Spartelmeer and Vogelmeer*: Within the first 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll pass Spartelmeer, a serene lake often dotted with waterfowl. Shortly after, Vogelmeer appears—a haven for birdwatchers. This lake is renowned for its rich avian life, especially in spring and autumn when migratory birds stop to rest. Bring binoculars to spot spoonbills, herons, and sometimes even rare species like the bittern.
*Dune Landscapes and Wildlife*: The trail meanders through classic Dutch dunes, with sandy paths bordered by sea buckthorn, wild roses, and swathes of heather. Keep an eye out for Konik horses and Scottish Highland cattle, which graze freely to maintain the open landscape. Deer and foxes are also occasionally seen, especially in quieter hours.
*’t Wed*: Around the halfway mark, you’ll reach ’t Wed, a popular swimming lake with a sandy beach. In summer, this is a great spot for a break or a quick dip. There are basic facilities here, including toilets and a small kiosk (open seasonally).
Nature and Historical Significance
Zuid-Kennemerland National Park is a protected area with a rich history. The dunes have served as natural barriers against the North Sea for centuries, and the park itself was established to preserve the unique flora and fauna of the region. Remnants of World War II bunkers are hidden among the dunes, a reminder of the area’s strategic importance during the conflict.
Practical Tips
The entire loop is on well-maintained paths, suitable for sturdy walking shoes but not requiring specialized gear. Dogs are allowed on leash in most areas, but check local signage for restrictions, especially near bird nesting sites. There are several benches and picnic spots along the way, and water fountains can be found near the main entrances.
For a safe and enjoyable hike, bring water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing, as the coastal wind can be brisk even on sunny days. The trail is open year-round, but spring and early summer offer the best opportunities for wildflower displays and birdwatching.
